Your best bet is a pump stack. I've heard of people using a piston of falling rock but I have never tried it.

pump stacks are a pain. ask yourself "do I really need magma on the surface, or do I just need magma closer to where my dwarves are?"

if the answer is the later, consider digging your fortress just above the magma pit.

You can make screws out of anything except stone, so glass screws are able (and magma-friendly) as well as iron and steel.  Actually it's only weapon-grade material, since they're trap components, so Copper, Bronze, Iron, Steel, Silver, and Bismuth Bronze are your options.  Go to the Forge, and Trap Components.  Iron and Steel are magma-safe, the rest aren't.  Glass is an alternative choice in case you're short of irons.

Very likely, yes, depending on how you do it.  It may not even be possible, the same way that stone anvils cannot be created without a specific custom reaction.  Dwarf up and make some glass!

You can't mod trap components to be makeable from stone - the best you can do is make a custom reaction, and that'll require generating a new world.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

So even if I mod, no stone screws?
What about gems?

He means that you can't just change a few values to easily make trap components at, say, a mason's workshop.  You'll have to create a custom reaction to create trap components out of stone.  Same deal with gems, which probably won't even be magma safe.

Remember that you can trade for sand (and embark with bags filled with it) now.  Sand is literally cheap as dirt, so you can just embark with 50 sandbags if you really want.

If all you really want is just enough magma to run a few magma forges, then you might be better off either going to the magma than getting the magma to you, but you could also try setting up a relay of magma pumps, as well.  If you only have 11 glass screw pumps for some reason, you can just make a resevoir every 10 floors, and deconstruct all but the top pump (which is presumably holding the magma in) and rebuild the whole array to go up the next ten floors.

I got used to the magma piston myself. The mass of magma it can move for oine time use it great for smelters, but not so much for flood traps.
