Actually a good spirit caller is natural Quartz tied to a string.

Better yet Quartz is rather cheap. I still wish I had my crystal.

It's cheap if you don't get scammed, or if you're not looking for stuff like double-terminated or other unusual formations. I've seen amazonite sold as amazon emerald for ungodly amounts, for instance (actually stood in line behind someone buying it, with my mom jumping in and telling the store owner off because of it), and unless you've got a guidebook handy or have been looking at rocks for years, you're not going to be able to tell what's actually what.

Your best bet is a rock store, if you can find one - they often hire collectors, or do their own collecting. They're where the new-age and touristy places buy from, and they're usually pretty awesome to talk to as a bonus. You don't have to overcharge for small fragmented quartz crystals when you have the equipment to seriously collect at Herkimer or some other good spot for more wealthy collectors, and rock isn't exactly expensive to store unless it's environmentally sensitive.

Uhh, you know, in Nethack, when gems are unindentifyed, they always look pretty nice, but when you dead, they usually tend to be just worthless glass, find some yellow glass. I live near sea, and alot of people drink, and they throw their beer flasks out in the water, smashing on the rocks, then the shards lie there for a week or something, and then its a round little pretty green gem! HOORAY FOR GLASS AND WAVES!
