My family fails to be impressed by the engineering marvels that DF is capable of. I've gotten some friends at school to try it, but they didn't stick with the game for long. On the other hand, they do still enjoy my stories of horrible mutilation and death, as a result of me failing to do something survival-critical.

Both me, and my friends just call it "Dorf Fort".

None of my friends play it, but I talk with them about it.

Two of them keep going "DAMNIT I NEED TO LEARN TO PLAY THIS GAME", but are usually so busy having backlogged fun when they're off work, that they don't have time to.

I'm glad I learned before I was employed...

Sorry, coming late to this thread.  Are we still on the original subject? (...looks at the posts immediately below the Post Reply form... yes, apparently we still are...)

Colleagues at work frequently ask me if I'm "killing dwarfs again?"

The thing is, apart from being rather protective of the little blighters, I don't play DF at work.  I'm only ever on these forums!

Most of my friends just call it "that weird game", though that's what they call most games i play in school, anyways. Me and my bro just refer to it as "dorf" between us, since "dwarf fortress" is a bit of a mouthful for our lazy danish vocal chords. :P (we also refer to the act of playing it as "dorfing")
I wish i could spark enough interest in my classmates for some proper nicknames to occur, but alas, no such luck. They ain't ready for the hardcore that is dorf.

The daughter has now graduated to playing mahjong by herself. She also enjoys making Sims. She's so close to playing DF, I can already hear the goblins screaming.

I've tried telling people that if it wasn't for DF, Minecraft would probably never have been invented.

They usually just say "Well at least my game has graphics!". I Laughed at their lack of patience, and started throwing elephants off my Eiffel tower just to see what would happen when they hit the magma sea at those speeds.  :D

My 5yo son is still calling it DF-Fortress.  Now, however, since I got the other computer set up, he tells me to play while he plays Portal (where he can quote the walk-throughs from YouTube verbatim, and follow them, but likes to say "I need help with this!") or Fable (where is is constantly asking of civvies are "bad team", targetting them for combat, and asking if he should slaughter them or not).

My mum has seen me playing it a few times, and when she brings up the weather it goes something like this "Why are you always inside playing pacman when you can be outside enjoying the sun?"
