My sister's building her first fortress. She has some bedrooms, a couple workshops, and a "grand staircase", which is one square across and six deep.

It's better than my other sister who complains that the brook animation in game burns her eyes. She doesn't even play because she thinks there's only one map available.

Although she did play ONE game. Flooded her fort in 2/7 water. thought that was cool, never played again. :|

@ Ultimuh: Most likely would

But she's already learned many life skills like:

How to murder elves
Throwing rocks at people often enough can make you more deadly than a tank
Don't go outside at night alone
Don't go night swimming

Those are just a few

Well, Just make sure she won't grow up to become a mass murdering sociopath.  :P

When she gets home from school one day, saying that dwarf murder simulator has a bug, because she was not able to tear off the brain of one schoolmate using his left lower leg, something is wrong...

Yeah there is!

Why didn't she use her dragon corpse to kill him?

Because dragons have aperantly gone extinct in her worldgen.

Lucky. My mom just calls it "those stupid dwarfs" and threatens to take my computer rights away if I don't go back to applying for scholarships...

That didn't last long, huh? Shame, cause binary's cool. Anyway, an important message: I will be changing my names on every username based thing I use to ASCIt on/around 10/1. Consolidating, I guess you could say.

Is no problem. Kill your mother, make her into floodgate, and donate to government. Next season, new mother arrives.

You realise she will be standing over his shoulder the moment he reads this.

I've been regaling my officemate with tales of magma traps, temper tantrums, and forgotten beasts for several months now.  He continues to insist that this game is imaginary...

I told one of my classmates about my annual Fiery Cleansing of the Hospital and now he wants to play this game.

My dad calls it Dwarf fort. He used to play ADOM and NetHack. He now plays this game after seeing me making kitten biscuits. My mom on the other hand calls it the insanity generator because me and dad are always telling each other stories of what we did in our forts...And then laughing like crazy people.

I actually did some bonding with my mom in the natural science museum over Christmas Break by commenting on how Dwarf Fortress had made me more interested in geology.

I also got some people in one of my online groups to try it, though most of them went "ew" after the first glance at the graphics and interface.

I have a friend who's twice my age. He was a bit drunk and came over to my house as I sat playing DF. He looked at the monitor, eyes widening and barked "Is that the inside of your computor?".

Children should either be getting possessed and making me mastercraft adamantine booties or staring at the squalid water-filled "party room" and out of my way.

I started playing DF after reading the Boatmurdered saga which I stumbled upon after googling for something roguelike after playing ADOM which I stumbled upon after playing a couple of MUDs... and I read about them in a game magazine which doesn't exist anymore.
Thank you dear magazine, I'm an almost happy person now.
