My 5yo son calls it "DF Fortress".  He likes the intro movie, but wants me to play Minecraft instead (assuming he stops playing Minecraft long enough to notice). :D

My family is always saying, "oh, are you playing those stupid dwarves again?" or "Playing with midgits again?". They progressively get more insulting. They dont understand ASCII graphics and would perfer 3D animations etc.

Ha, that's cute. My nephews are still to young to even know what a computer is, much less a computer. My cousins, though...

Well, they are fairly tolerant of my obsession. I'll come down the stairs, saying something like... "So, I just built a nest box, and -"

"Is this something from dwarf fortress?"

"... Yes."

"I knew it!"

All of my friends call it "That kitten-slaughtering abomination that is marginally passed off as an actual game."

Kitten slaughter? the Dwarves would prefer "proactive use of available resources".

While preventing an overabundance of an environmentally unfavorable predator species. :D

For no reason at all I draw your attention to this passage from my Nist Akath death toll report...

Next time try this:

I'll come down the stairs, saying something like... "I just ripped off the bones and flesh of some dwarves to create weapons and ammunation and we managed to make whine out of blood. For the cruelty of our kind!!!"

What would they say?

My girlfriend insists on calling it Dork Fortress, and sometimes feels threatened that I actually love it more than I do her

Yes, but what if I hadn't killed every damn one of those? I'd have that many grown cats. At least.
