Is it possible to make your civ graze?
« on: February 22, 2011, 08:35:24 pm »

That is, can you make your dwarves (or whatever) go up and eat grass to fulfill their hunger?  I guess if you made them herbivorous and prevented them from using the 'farmer' and 'herbalist' jobs, they wouldn't even have any other food options.  Which would be neat.

Someone tried this.  They will graze, but they will not eat other food.  It's grass or nothing, sorta.

I can deal with that, thanks!  Um...This has probably been answered elsewhere, but grazers are apathetic to the material of what they eat, aren't they?  IE, eyeball plants are perfectly nutritious to vegetarian critters?

Right.

The biggest issue will probably be keeping them outside and not starving themselves.

Oh, so they're not smart enough to wander outside on their own when they get hungry?

I don't think so. I think I'll do a search to make sure...

Edit: Hm. I can't find the specific quote, but I think judging from grazer behaviour in general, it's pretty likely that civvers will act in the same way.

Yeah, I put a quick blurb in the "what's new in .19?" thread.

They seem to seek grass within the area they are in, but won't leave meeting halls and the like to find grass if they get hungry.  Which means you must position meeting halls etc over grass, and make them large enough to support your current population.

200+ dwarves will quickly turn the grassy fields into a barren wasteland.

What if you also add the [VERMINHUNTER] tag?

Just set a low grazer tag and dig out the entire soil layer.

Don't you need a high grazer tag?  I thought that higher numbers meant more relative nutrition gained, so fewer tiles need to be consumed.

I second Sowelu, high numbers in the grazer tag mean creatures get more nutrition per tile of grass they eat, and therefore don't need to eat as much.

It works, but they will almost inevitably starve at current.
