Pop Cap
« on: March 31, 2007, 03:47:00 am »

I've played a couple games now with a pop cap of 30 and it worked fine, no problems!  But this game, I'm up to 55 now!  My first wave of immigrants put me at 35, which was fine as I know the cap is rather "soft" so I assumed I'd get no new waves of immigrants other than nobles.  Well, I haven't gotten my nobles yet, but I did get another HUGE wave of immigrants pushing me to 55.

What causes the pop cap to do this?  It seemed to be working fine in the past, and checking the file shows that it's still set at 30.  In the past, if I ever went over 30 I'd simply not get any new immigration waves untill I went under 30.  But it seems to be totally normal immigration levels right now and I don't have a "processing room".

I guess it's time to send them out hunting!  I hear unicorn is tastey.

Did you completely exit the game, edit the cap to 30, then start the game? By my own tests, it is only read in at startup.

I had already changed it to 30 and played a few games that correctly capped at 30-35 every game.  Now I suddenly have about 55 dwarves.

My population "story" goes as such:

7 dwarves arrive,  2 miners dig to the river.  1 drowns as soon as he reaches the river (great luck!).  As a memorial to that miner I swear to endure.

My "overseer" character is bitten by a cave spider and have bouts of stunned lower-body.

Anvil and smith arrive.

A load of immigrants arrive due to my extreme amount of crafts, brings the pop up to 35.

Another huge load of immigrants come, bringing the pop up to 55.

What's going on???

Not sure what's up.  Once it got to 35, the next wave should have had zero pull.  Other observations are welcome here.  I know there have been some before.

Ok, I thought I'd do another test.  This time I lowered the cap to 18.  The game went totally fine, I avoided doing any trade and I didn't get any winter or spring migrants.  Finally the next spring I got some migrants which put me up to exactly 19, one over the mark, not bad I thought.  Fall and winter came, no new immigrants.  Spring came, still 19, no one new showed up.  yay!  It's working exactly!

Or is it?

Suddenly in summer I get 20 migrants!!

none of these migrants are nobles or anything.  Just like in my last game,  one last huge wave of immigrants came despite my population being at or over the cap due to previous immigrations.

ANy theories?

I played this game non-stop, no saves till i came here to post.  Maybe the cap only take effect after a load for some reason?

Only my origional 8 fellows had beds, the other 11 shared 5 beds in a barracks as I finished their true bedrooms.  Maybe a dwarf has to have a bed to be counted for the cap?

In both my games, the pop cap seemed to come into effect after it was surpassed by about 50-100%.  The cap seems to work, jsut when it set it to 20, it capped around 40.  When it set it to 18, it seemed to go stable around 35.

Wait, 20 migrants in summer?  Does that ever happen in the normal game?  Usually summer and autumn migrations are small.  Maybe the pop cap is setting up some kind of weird delay or something.

Just for the record, I've only played two games  so far, and if I remember correctly I had more than 20 immigrants in the first immigration wave in the first game. You could imagine my surprise when my pop suddenly rose from 7 to 29 or something. This was without messing with the pop cap.

Edit: Oh, wait, in spring that's normal? Probably was spring then, never mind.

The last few games I've played I've gotten NO immigrants in the late fall, none in the winter or spring.  Then I get a big amoutn that puts me a little over what ever cap I've set.  THEN by the next spring I always get another huge load that bumps me wayyy past the cap.

Nobles don't seem to be showing.

I'm running a cap of 21 currently and have 39 dwarves currently.

Is there any way a user could mod the immigration settings?  Change the min/max immigration amounts and how much your wealth is taken into account?  I'd love to maybe set it so I'd only get 3-5 immigrants per migration, would probably let the cap do its job easier.
