Now with 31.19, we've got fowl that we can raise, which means a source of feathers. We've also got wool from llamas and alpacas. This means we have all the tools we need to make a proper mattress. Which leads to the suggestion:

Put more design into bed-making. (Or, potentially, into the furniture industry as a whole.)

We can continue to keep the beds simple, which is how they are right now. A wooden bed is just a slab of wood that's raised off of the ground. Not hard to do at all. However, bed(frame)s are made out of more than just wood. Or they can be covered/plated with metal, which also keeps with the medieval them DF has. Actually, having a wooden mold makes a lot more sense to help with forging a metal bed, especially if it has fine detailing.

Now for the other part: the mattress. Since we're felling trees to make beds, we've already got another basic component for a mattress: leaves. That helps keep things simpler on that aspect. (In other words, give the option to totally ignore it.) Dwarves wouldn't be happy sleeping on it, but they'd prefer that over the ground any day of the week. Then there's the better quality stuff. Mattresses require at least some form of covering, to make at minimum a pad. Leather would be a good choice as a baseline (for the pad), since it can be treated/waterproofed. The other textile goods would work as well, but leather stands out since you could (in theory) make a water bed.

The filling for a mattress is another part, too. Like I mentioned earlier, we've got access to feathers and wool. Stuff 'em with that. I'm not sure what the average return is on feathers/wool as I haven't played around with that, but it would take a decent amount to stuff a mattress. Like, all of the feathers from at least a dozen geese. Something to keep the down-feather mattress a luxury item.

This isn't to replace the bed at the carpenter's shop, but rather to replace the building. So you could build a wood bed with a leather pad (or no pad), or a platinum bed with a giant cave spider silk mattress stuffed with goose down feathers. We've already got other buildings/constructions that require multiple items, so precedence is already there.

Could have a Clothesmaker shop reaction.  "Apply Mattress".  They pull a bed from a stockpile, and whatever cloth/silk/feathers/wool is available to make a mattress.  Then they put it back.  The bed is turned into a "Pig Tail Cloth Bed", or some such.

I was thinking the same thing recently, but I forgot to post it.

However, I would make sheets / mattresses wear out and let dwarves claim new ones like they do with clothing (though, obviously, it would be nice to have that actually work again, first....)

I'd like to see something like a stone bed that can be made, but only if you make a fabric matress.

You don't really need feathers inside the mattress, straw was also used, and the straw can just be the leftovers from the pig tails, as well. 

Stone bed frames with pig tail mattresses.  It's at least as good as a solid wood bed (and less elfy than sleeping on leaves).  Maybe a feathery or wool-stuffed mattress could be introduced if you wanted to up bed quality or something, which might make dwarves more rested/need to sleep less.

I'd say that it should be a single reaction, however.  You can't just make a stone bed frame and lay it down, you have to make a bed frame, then combine it with the mattress in a reaction to produce the complete bed.  (Alternately, you can make the mattress as a component that the mason would then use as an "ingredient" along with the stone to make the complete bed.)

Before Max White comes in, I should note this stuff can be modded, and has been in the past.  We just have better materials for it, now.

I've modded different values to wood, so an *oak bed* is actually pretty nice, particularly if you bother to stud it with silver. But dwarves needing blankets and other personal articles are always on my list of things to support.

It would also be good if we could make metal beds (or bed frames, if we ever get bedding).  I got a brass bed from a mood recently and had to wonder why I couldn't make those normally, given that they're pretty common IRL.

I look at a bed as a place to sleep in the first place, one that can later be improved with pillows, mattresses, blankets, bed frames, hammocks, etc. A soft cover is probably more important for a good night's sleep than the bed frame, so it's kind of a backwards approach now.

Perhaps there can also be Ad hoc Beds as well, a simple pile of hay or leaves, or the next step up, a sack stuffed with those things. Would certianly help on the plains where wood is at a premium.
Another suggestion i'd have is things like double sized beds for nobles, and perhaps married dwarf couples. Though, i think right now they just share a single bed and that still works. This could lead into things like furniture design, where there are multipile types of kinds of furniture, for instance, 4 poster beds with curtians for added value, or bunk beds for dormitories and barracks.
