38A spam
« on: February 05, 2008, 09:42:00 pm »

i'm sorry, but this is a little ridiculous seed where 60% of inhabitable land has some sort of town on it, not only that, 182 rejects

few stats:
16k hist figures
11k dead
3.5k sites?!
an entire volcano surounded by gobo towers

Okay, I'll try it out at some point.

Definitely seems a bit messed up. I had zero rejects on my first world gen in the new version, somewhere around 70k dead too.

Same issue here.  First world I generated was fine, nice, evenly spaced towns and all that.  This one (pictured, seed 4141341287, no mods or utilities installed) has quite the urban sprawl issue though.

Hmm. The race of driders I modded shows this particular behavior. I'll see if making another world will make a difference...

Also, if you make a race like another's site type, there is a high chance they will ALL migrate to site in question. I've had human towns without a single human, but instead hundreds upon hundreds of elves and dwarves... MIGRANT elves and dwarves, of all things.  That was modded, though...

Wait, is this bad?

That's a perfect site to adventure through.
Sure having to many towns is bad but having the occasional one of these^ is very nice.

The thing is, the site gets created, gets marked on the map, but the inhabitants move away too quickly to build anything, so you have a lot of empty spaces on the map that distract you and make finding a specific site very difficult.

Using Dopefish's seed, I got the exact same map, but no city problem.  I'm not sure what's going on.  Maybe you have to generate another world in the same play?

Did you play with the civ raws at all etgfrog? I tried etgfrog's seed too but only got 772 sites, I have altered my raws to increase the population cap for cities and civs and the number of starting couples.

I just genned etgfrog's seed. Second world generated in the same session, no games started/continued, looked at legends of first world generated and exported both maps. No mods/hacks, 137k figures, 121k dead, 3.5k sites. Plenty of site spam.

I think that might be it.  I generated one world to play a little Dwarf mode, played that for a bit then generated another for use with adventure mode.  Going to see if I can repeat that just now.

(Five minutes and two worlds later...)

I think it may well be to do with generating two in one session...  There's a mountain range here that has Dwarven settlements practically surrounding it. Five thousand, five hundred and thirty three sites.  Ouch.  And nearly a million events during worldgen. Also ouch.

Of course, this does just make me curious as to whether the problem will be compounded further if I generate a third world in one session...

(One worldgen and subsequent post editing later...)

Hmm.  Doesn't seem to be compounded if more than one additional world is generated.  The third world has about the same extent of sitespam.  To sate my own curiosity, I also regenerated the seed I supplied earlier in the thread and navigated to the location I screenshotted.

I also tried exiting Dwarf Fortress and reopening it before generating another random world to see if that would reproduce the bug.  It didn't, so multiple worldgens in the same OS session seem to be okay, just not the same Dwarf Fortress session.

Apologies if I seem a little discombooberated.  It's way, way past my bedtime.

btw, yes, all the raws were untouched except for the guybrush graphics pack, but i don't belive graphics packs effect anything except for the init file.

I'm gonna try to reproduce Dopefish's results.

edit: My raws are edited in the same way as before during these tests. First world with seed 0, 715 sites.

edit: Second world with seed 0, 800 sites.

edit: Third world with seed 0, 693 sites. All these tests were done in the same   df session. I'll do one more because this is just weird.

edit: Ok these next 2 tests are in the same new df session, but everything else is the same. Forth world seed 0, 715 sites.

edit: Fifth world seed 0, 715 sites.

edit: Ok I'm gonna run one final test in the same session. World six seed 0, 715 sites.
