Global Warming?
« on: March 26, 2007, 10:45:00 am »

I was playing adventure mode, and had a random encounter on a glacier with a Polar Bear. Simple enough. As soon as I moved the entire glacier melted, leaving me in an ocean of water.
After swimming to some mud, I was trapped, not being able to swim away. Almost everyone else drowned.

This is an inconvenient truth-how can we continue to destroy our dwarf fortress's by excessive overhunting, charcoal burning, magma flooding and overt racist tendancies toward peacful Goblin natives? IT HAS TO STOP.  ;)

As the dwarf scrambled up onto the small muddy lump submerged beneath the waves, the Polar Bear, with glowing eyes, telepathically spoke:

"You see this, dwarf? This is my world in ten years if you don't make a difference today."

Later on that day, the dwarf set three entire villages on fire. Apparently the omen hadn't made much of an impact.

In Dwarf Fortress mode, in maps with snow, it also happends that all snow melts at once. And just two seconds later the snow keeps falling slowly. I would have imagined the melting to be a bit slower...

This sounds like a bug for the temperature rules Toady put in.  I think it would work better if it melted slowly with massive Icebergs floating around the ocean.  Imagine how cool it would be to be stuck on a floating iceberg for months, eating seals and fishing until you reach shore.

The rules work differently now, so it'll be a new patch of bugs in the next version, but yeah, occasionally it was not reading the temperature correctly and melting everything in areas that it thought were cool enough to support glaciers.
