Everyone bled to death
« on: March 25, 2007, 07:37:00 pm »

So, my lovely 30 dwarf commune decided it was time to go for the adamantine.  A few sad newcomers were turned into some notice "bait" crossbowmen and the standard bridge-trap hallway was built.  The area east of the chasm was sealed off via a draw bridge with only the noble archers, a miner, a couple fishermen who decided to join the fun.

The demons were set loose, all but one were killed by the bridges.  Everyone east of the chasm had been killed but now the last demon just sat around since there was no path to someone to kill.

I made another squad of a couple dwarves, lowered the bridge, then quick raised it again.  Sadly a farmer and my legendary engraver fell to their deaths as the bridge went up.  (woudl be really nice if we could designate areas off-limits, or at least set seperate off-limits orders like for going outside with the the river/chasm/lava areas).

The bait worked, the last demon and two dwarves were crushed.  Time to celebrate and get mining!

*bled to death*
*Bled to death*
*Bled to death*

what??  hmm I guess a few other dwarves were injured and I just didn't notice.  Wait.. oh god, they are hauling around bodies and items that are on FIRE.  I canceled all those hauling jobs and thinks seemed to be ok.

*Bled to death*
*Bled to death*
*Bled to death*
*Bled to death*

every few min another dwarf bleeds to death.  With only about 15 left I have my eye on them all, or at least I'm trying now that my place  is all smokey.

Nothing I did could stop them all dropping off.  Finally my last legendary dwarf, my miner and the last surviving founder, died.  Only 4 dwarves left, my nobles.  Great, they're usefull...

So, I abandoned my finest most fun fortress.

What was going on??  I understand the few dwarves that died while carrying flaming items (what a great bug!) but why were my dwarves bleeding to death a full season after the battle?

Were they still on fire? Or possibly wearing flaming clothing picked from the fallen? Fires never seem to go out, so seasons can pass until the dwarves finally pick up burning items, catch fire, and die.

I also had one guy who was on fire and laid in his bed, which set the bed on fire. The bed never went away, however, and later another dwarf caught fire by sleeping on the flaming bed.

Man, maybe the dwarves need some kind of firefighting unit  :)

Some that were carrying flaming items died from heat.  But tons of unrelated dwarves that were barely in the same area, never picked up or used any of the flaming items.. they all started bleeding to death over the months.

maybe the smoke does something to them?

DOes anyone have any insight into this? I'm fearful to start a new fortress untill I know how to fix this or avoid this.  I guess I could just never fight the demons... or try to figure out a way to do it that involves no burning items.

I came back to this fort in adventure mode after a couple other games.  The fires and smoke and miasma were still going strong.  In fact when I entered the fort I started getting spammed about trolls bleeding to death and dieing from heat.  Crazy!!

Bleeding to death randomly is burning to death. They caught on fire somehow. They don't die instantly when they catch fire, you know. They could very well have brought the burning equipment back to the stockpile, and then anyone who goes to that stockpile would catch fire themselves... Perhaps they got a bite to eat while on fire and set your food stockpile ablaze- that would spread through the whole fortress in a hurry..

If a fire goes out, the square might still be hot briefly as well, but that effect doesn't last too long.

Please bear in mind these two facts above all else.

1) The game is in alpha. Things are going to break, not work, etc. Deal with it or delete the game.

2) Losing is fun! Especially when you get to watch dwarves run around on fire, babbling, and screaming!

Of course you *are* right, but I didn't *feel* like fun when an elephant took on my legendary miner who just started constructing the road.

He successfully got himself to legendary state, starting as an unskilled rogue, so I got sort of proud of him. Maybe I shouldn't  :) We tend to identify too much with what we think we see, right?

Losing is fun, well, maybe it's a start for those who are eager to win. But what is losing, really? Does 'losing' a fort due to extinction really constitute a loss? I think it all depends on perception.

I wrote a letter to the King to be admitted to carrying the name Alcus, as I did in another world.

I love losing, it adds to the world.  But losing due to never-ending fires that slowly destroy my entire fortress, I guess it's pretty funny actually.  I was just wondering if there's a way I could edit an ini file or something to make fire go away or only last a little while since I obviously can't edit the AI to be smart enough to know "FIRE HOT"

Just turn off temperature in the init file, Baro.

Yep. turn off temperature.  Myself, I love seeing the mobs on fire (especially that time I had like a nine or ten squad human siege who would do nothing but sit at their campfires until a freak lava flood crept up on them!)  The chance my fort will succumb to the same fate is a small price to pay for that.
