That's not why we're here. This is Arsenal of Democracy:




It is a World War 2 grand strategy game of the first degree; some of you might know it better by the name Hearts of Iron II¹. The whole world is your playground, and any nation your agent. It doesn't simulate things down to the level of something like War in the Pacific, as featured in a certain thread which may be responsible for getting my WW2 juices flowing enough to consider attempting this, but the focus on a broader scale brings things like production, research, and national manpower into play. Combat is handled on the level of provinces and divisions. Naval and aerial combat are abstracted to some degree; you build the forces and send them at each other, but that's about it.

The reason I'm a fan of the game is because it's basically a 'what if?' machine. My last game was as Italy, in which I first succeeded in Ethiopia, avoided any alliances with the Germans, and then spent my time building up a land army from 1940 to 1942 or so, hitting the Germans in the flank while they were deeply engaged in the Soviet Union. That game ended with Italy sweeping across Europe all the way down to France and Spain, leaving me to face the Soviets in Europe and the British and Americans sidelined in Belgium. In a few days, one of my friends is going to see if France can make it to Berlin while the Germans are busy in Poland. The hypothetical situations are great fun.

Since I'm pretty much done with my Italy game and looking for a new challenge. The goal: to defeat the Germans, sweep the Allies out of Europe entirely, invade Britain, and finally make our way across the Atlantic to defeat the United States once and for all.

Crossed-off numbers are successes, crossed-off entries are no longer relevant, fully crossed-off lines are out of the plan:

1. By 1939: be prepared to turn back a German invasion in terms of units. Take our half of Poland and all of Pribaltika after the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. Annex Finland entirely in the Winter War.
2. By German invasion plus six months (November 1943): halt the German advance and turn it back upon them. (Back on the list, as Germany did, in fact, attack.)
3. By May 1942 (if the Germans have not attacked): attack Germany. (See #2.)
4. By German invasion plus one year (May 1944), or May 1942 plus one year: reach Berlin. (It could happen if we continue to be lucky.) (It took an extra year.)

Details:

1. We seized Pribaltika and more of Poland than the Soviets historically got in September and early October, 1939. We successfully annexed Finland in the Winter War, from November 16, 1939 to January 26, 1940.
2. Germany attacked us in early April of 1943. The Wehrmacht's advance stalled that winter.
4. This is crossed off, since I sincerely doubt we'll be in Berlin in two months.

I did quite a few of these on paradox forums, nearly did one here yesterday But my AoD crashed while I was retesting it grrrr. That said, this is easily the best HoI game, barring none.

Good luck!

I suggest Britain to play as, aside from Italy I find them the most fun to play, and they have active aspects in air, naval and land throughout the war.

If you pick Britain, I want Archibald Wavell Commanded India/Burma army in reality (I believe).

I can't stand AoD myself because of the damn unbalanced crowding the battlefield rule.  Among other things, it means that you litterally should never build infantry.  Seriously.  One tank is better then 20 infantry.

When does darkest hour come out?

On the assault, maybe. I'd rather have properly-supported infantry holding the line for me.

Supposing you're referring to stacking penalty, I'm alright with it. It occasionally gets a little bit sticky attacking through a narrow part of the world, but dealing with it is part of warfare.

My bigger beef is with the carrier mechanics, where a CAG is basically very long-ranged guns...

I prefer both.

Stacking was always unrealistic in previous hoi's, there is such a think as a target rich environment 

The CAG stuff may look silly to begin, but the previous stuff never worked. AoD/HoI2's carrier mechanics solved years of carriers being worthless in HoI 1

There's a coincidence, I just got HOI 2 and am playing around with it. My poor laptop's graphic card can't deal with the new Europa Universalis engine so I'd given up trying these games, but boy have I been missing out.

First play through, trying to save the czechoslovakia from invasion by joinging with the Axis, turns out you get the option to do that when the Munich event pops up, which mean's I've just thrown a few roomfulls of currency down the drain.

I've decided that it's going to be the USSR, with the eventual goal of defeating the Allies and pulling off an invasion of the US. I'll give people a few more days to decide if they want to throw in their hats for Minister of the Army, Minister of the Navy, or Minister of the Air Forces; failing that I'll come up with an initial status report by Friday or so and let people decide if they want to follow a commander.

Hyo: sure thing. People who are in as leaders of various sorts (as opposed to following a particular general or unit) get to stick around in their leadership role no matter how many purges the actual position undergoes.
