I think this can be done by adding [ITEM_HARD] to the bone material template.

Nice short term fix... maybe I'll do that.

But I'd like a vanilla reaction to make bone blocks or something, or perhaps to use bones as a material in engraving. There's innumerable examples of buildings built out of bone or decorated entirely with bone.

Perhaps some form of bone ceramics?  Grind the bones, then mix them with water and paste, and fire them at a kiln?  I'm not sure how chemically accurate that is, but sounds reasonable to me...

I hope this gets added in as vanilla when magic gets added into the game.

Ripping bones out of arms and then carving them into bolts to kill your enemy seems the ultimate dwarfy action to me.

This is a good idea.

Having a dwarf hanging out in a workshop and deciding in a normal dwarf state of mind to rip out his own shin to make bolts remains horrifying.

I'm all for shearing skin and all, but, beards?  Then you'd just be short elves.

Elves have beards.  (Well, male ones, at least.)

Plus, elves have the same size as dwarves now, and there are no differences in body proportionality according to the way that bodies are built.

So yes, according to the raws that Toady made, elves are basically just dwarves with different average stats.

Enjoy.

And an ethic set that makes them deliciously butcherable.

If you made shaving a beard yield 1-3 threads of adamantine, what a horrible choice you would have to make.

You do know that some players make "babyfalls" by making female dwarves spit out even more babies, just to watch a cascade of dwarven babies fall 20z-levels to their deaths for fun, right?

Is the level of comfort based on z-level?

Urist McOnTheFifteenthZ-Level has been comforted by a babyfall recently.

Kogan McOnTheFirstZ-Level has been horrified by a babyfall recently.

No. Dwarves are only comforted by mist. So it would have to do more with where in the fall the mist is generated.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

I think that might be the bottom... So then are they mortified or comforted?

Well, considering it's a baby mist, they might be going OCD trying to wash all the blood off, but keep picking up then dropping the soap...  (It's slippery, darnit!)

Now to find a way to extract iron from blood mist.

I made a workshop that does this a couple months ago and posted it on the modding forum.  I'll try finding the link when I'm back at my pc.  Now that ceramics are possible I may have to see if I can do bone bricks...

Somehow this thread went from making dwarves rip their bones straight from their bodies to the calming blood mist generated by dozens of babies hitting the ground at once. I wonder how that happened? Oh, that's right, I did it. My bad.
