Letting the game run unattended really irks me. I don't trust these dwarves. You know what these dwarves are capable of. You know what this game is capable of.

+ Remove all the less interesting gems, metals, alloys, stones, soils, crafts, plants, creatures, vermins and body parts.
+ Remove clothings requirement
+ Remove miasma
+ Remove as many reactions as you can afford, especially if it's get_material_from_reagent or involve reaction_class (such as the render fat one)
+ Less civs
+ Smaller worlds
+ Smaller embark
+ No temperature
+ No weather
+ No running water on embark
+ 0-1 cavern layers
+ Disable magma sea and the layer beyond
+ Stick to .18
+ Buy enough ram to hold the whole embark and extra temp data. Disable paging.
+ Purchase a more powerful computer (reasonable)
+ kidnap and put toady on a lease until he optimize the code to a more manageable level (affordable)
+ Hire a top tier hardware corporation to design a console specifically to run DF (very expensive)

Compressed that for you.

Just wait for Intel to release their Xeon E7-8870 this year.

Frequency: 2.4 GHz
Cores: 10

Then embark on a 10x10 area. Fun.

Edit: I got a better idea!

Travel to the future (like 50 -100 years) steal some super PC, get back and then embark on the entire map!

Counter-idea.  Travel to the future and enjoy Dwarf Fortress in Beta!

Fun with poor FPS since DF only uses 1 core. Which hardly means any fun...

Single core superpowers are a thing of the past.

DF will become a different place when multi-core support comes through.
Quite different indeed!

Multi threading is terrible thing. And in DF... It is enough to say that adding multi threading to existing program will result in many, many, many new bugs.

Solution : each instance of DF runs on 1 core, but you can play many fortresses at once in the same world. When each instance gets to a 1-month or 1-season milestone, the world updates and cross-references between fortresses appear.

Imagine 10 DF programs running, each with totally different fortresses and playstyles, trading with each other.

Try playing an almost exclusively surface fort. For some reason, I've noticed that this keeps FPS fairly high.

Getting a game sim of any complexity to run across multiple cores is almost impossible.  Folks can generally dream up some fake game world situation where it would work - but for most games, no.  Something like DF where he is going to have an order of event applies and resolutions is impossible.

You could spend time going through the sim and looking for iterative loops where previous results don't affect others and split that operation up.  But its going to take a lot of time for probably not much reward.
