Oookay. So, to re-rail the thread (we're talking government shutdown, not taxation theory)...we've got two more days until B-day, and they're disturbingly un-close to reaching an agreement. I'm getting the distinct feeling there isn't going to be an 11th hour compromise this time.

If it seems that I'm a bit fixated on this, it's because I'm a Federal contractor -- if the government shuts down, my job is in limbo. I'll still have a job, but if it goes on for more than a day or two, I might be indefinitely furloughed (without pay) until a budget gets passed.

Same here. I've been saving up money to pay off my car early, so I am not absolutely screwed but this won't be good. Theoretically we will can get unemployment benefits to hold us over as well if stays shut down long enough. I think I'll be looking back into the civil sector for a new job if it happens though.

Well, if it goes on for a *long* time, then getting unemployment is going to be the least of our worries.  :-\

The latest word here is that since DOJ is considered mostly mission-critical, and we're supporting their active investigations, we'll still be on the job. Not so sure how that's going to play out in reality, though. Especially if a lot of the secondary support units are not active. Fun ensues.

I am fairly certain my job is shutting down because I am involved in development that isn't being actively used immediately in military action. Everyone is being very obtuse about it though, probably to keep us productive in the meantime. The crazy thing is that I have heard that it won't affect our deadlines even if we are furloughed.

I didn't do the research right with a couple of my previous statements.  The national bank and postal service and associated ambitious infrastructure were began by the first congress.  The militia act was began by the second congress.  The act for the relief of sick disabled seamen was passed by the fifth congress.

Still, these were very, very early in our nations history.  The men writing and passing this legislation were the founding fathers.  They never batted an eye at government intervention in the economy.

Also, government appropriation of land wasn't just limited to eminent domain.  Anybody ever wonder who kicked the Indians off the land?

Oh ho ho.  Clearly they had no more right to that land than any other woodland creature. :(

On the bright side, the AIM did some good.  Things are still a mess, though.

Yeah, I'm going to be *really* pissed of if the US Army doesn't have my paycheck directly deposited on the 15th. Not enough to not report back when my R&R ends, but pissed off nonetheless.

The vast majority, if not all, of active duty military will continue to work as that is vital for national defense.

Note that that was ruled illegal. The SUpreme Court simply lacked an army to make Jackson obey.

I heard that in the case of default, unemployment will be one of the first things to go.. very strange, but I wouldn't count on it entirely if congress fails to pass a budget.

It's absurd to me that a lot of Republicans are holding the world hostage with the threat of global economic meltdown just because they want to keep their tax loopholes. Honestly.. they're willing to cut social security and medicare/medicaid or even let the United States default just so they can keep screwing over Americans with their no-tax corporations.

A huge reason the U.S. and its citizens are so poor these days is because of the sickly tax revenue stream we've been seeing ever since Reagan's policies. People have no concept of just how astronomically LOW the tax rate currently is; ESPECIALLY for the RICH. Play time is over, millionaires. Time to pay your fair share. Or, you know, anything at all.

According to most sources I've read, congress only has one more shot at this. In about two more weeks, the United States will reach the debt ceiling and it will be unlawful to borrow any more money, at which point the U.S. will default and cause havok to the world economy. The treasury is already working all the black magic they can to prevent this. We are approaching the absolute hard limit unless congress moves to increase the debt ceiling in addition to delaying the budget again. I'm not sure how easy that would be to do.

Hrm... That is exactly the opposite of what I have been reading, do you have an official source for that?

Work yes but paid no.

Telling the men with the guns to work without pay is the kind of sound governance I can get behind.

They raise the debt ceiling all the time. There have been many years where a budget was never passed, and they just fund everything through other means. It's all for show, so don't fall for it!

Ah, well okay then.

Interesting how none of these articles seem to mention that. Oh well. Gotta get those ratings instead of spreading rational information. *sigh*
