It's been forever since I finished that game. Every time I play it I swear I forget to change weapons between Ibsen's Castle and fighting the Guardians.

American Gods. The Death of the main character's life.

By that, I don't mean that he's the one that dies, he does not. When he is released from prison at the beginning of the story, he finds that everything he looked forward to in his release, every thing that he loved and lived for, is not only gone, but betrayed him in the worst possible way imaginable. The way this is painted and haunts him throughout the story is extremely wrenching.

I'm really annoyed that I lost that book when I went to work over one of my summer holidays. It was my first Neil Gaiman book, and I really enjoyed it. Maybe not quite as much as Neverwhere, but it was certainly excellent.

I hate FF7 for boosting Playstation into its position of success and knocking Nintendo down into negligence for many years.  The market divide would not have been nearly so large without Square's betrayal.  I also thought the story and especially the setting of FF7 were convoluted and nearly incoherent.  It felt constructed of isolated places and events that were implied to be related to each other but really weren't.  Why is there a cyberpunk dystopia a short jog away from a quaint victorian village which is just another short jog away from a feudal ninja tribe, as if they're all completely unaware of the existence of one another?  It felt so disjointed to me.  Plus, the characters were some of the most stereotyped in the entire franchise.  I don't mind the push for graphics, and do not believe that great graphics automatically means bad gameplay.... but it definitely marked a turning point in the gameplay of FF games that I didn't like.  FF7's graphics weren't that amazing anyway.  The cutscenes were mind blowing for their time, but everything else would have looked much better hand drawn at that point.  As for gameplay, everything started becoming much more restricted, like equipment becoming strictly a matter of regular linear upgrade of the same exact items with a different name & numbers attached.  Materia an improvement on magicite?  I found it dumbed down and rigid by comparison.

And finally I can't help but be annoyed by undeserved hype.  I don't normally care, but there are extremes... and the only other game to come close to being as overrated as FF7 would be Halo, which coincidentally is also largely responsible for wedging Microsoft firmly into the console industry and I dislike their influence as much as Sony's, if not more.  Plus, its hype has earned it offshoot games, a short anime series, a movie, etc... when other Square games deserve the attention far far more.  When FF6 or Chrono Trigger gets that kind of treatment, I'll have much less to bitch about.

I'll give it some points, though.  It had some of the best art design and music of the franchise.  Those Who Fight Further is one of my favorite fight tracks.

I liked V more then VI. I know, crazy ass clown beats tree, but Galuf was too bad ass. I mean that bit where you fall into the ruins and he gets seperated from the rest of the party was awesome.

It didn't improve on the Esper system because they're both fundamentally different, but it was interesting in it's own right. It surely made up in part for how boring the weapons were in the game, since you could customize their special effects to pretty much whatever you wanted. Plus you could make some pretty cool combo effects. It wasn't anything really deep, but neither were Espers which were pretty much "these stats go up, you learn these spells."

When FF6 or Chrono Trigger gets that kind of treatment, I'll have much less to bitch about.

NO! Have you seen the FF7 schlock they've put out? Why would you want them to ruin FF6 and Chrono Trigger with that nonsense?

Would you have Square chain themselves to a system and a company that *was* incredibly inferior to the Playstation? Nintendo needed to get knocked down, they were acting like they didn't need to innovate anymore (CD's man, CD's!). I'll concede the point that FF7's world is pretty disjointed, but I didn't feel like it was all that bad. There's Midgar, held up to the extreme. Then there's the quaint little villages like Kalm, which is awfully similar in design to the other cities, like Gogana or Correl (before they both got destroyed) or Rocket Town or Neibeliem. Then there's Wutai and Cosmo Canyon which both have very good reasons to be different and Junoun which is presented as a juxtaposistion of the Midgar City and the Kalm Town.

I'm not a graphic person (I play DF and am working on an additional playthrough of FF7), but I've found that FF7's combat and growth aren't very linear. Especially with weapons, where I found myself having to do  some hard thought and expirimentation to find the right combination of straight power, materia slots, and growth rate (same for armor, just with defense). The fact that no weapon was the absolute best (with the ultimates all having zero growth), made in a challenge. When I play older FF's, I never really see that, just grind, kill, attack, and heal.

Moreover, I argue that a lot of the character types in FF7 became sterotypes *because* of FF7. It's like faulting Holy Grail because so much is derivative off of it.

By the way, finished the DS remake of Lufia 2, and they removed the whale scene.  Dekar just kills 2 weak enemies and says hey guys I'm back.  GRRAAAGHHHHHHHH.  They didn't handle the ending part very well either.  The fortress of doom is just fighting the sinistrals in order(Save 1, which you don't really get to fight, you'll know which), and the "for the savior" part didn't have the sense of urgency of the original.

Yeah, sorry.  I couldn't resist saying my bit, but it wasn't exactly worthy of its own thread.  So I tried to minimize the damage with a labelled spoiler.

I'm trying to think of more notable character deaths, but all I can think about is FF6 and how much I want to be involved in a remake   I already have a 3d model of Atma Weapon in progress.
