Crichton finds out that Aeryn's pregnant, and he asks her to marry him on a boat out in the lake, and she says yes! And....then an alien fighter out of nowhere zooms down and disintegrates both of them as they embrace.

I remember the group I was watching that episode with, there was just shocked silence, followed by a loud "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU........"

This is kind of cheating, but for me it was Kharak in Homeworld 1.  The genocide of the Exiles (and the death of those on that one cryo-tray I couldn't save, no matter how fast I got my ships over there) pushed me through the entire game, wanting revenge on the empire that did this and a happy ending for the race that lost its home.

Then I failed at the end of Homeworld 2 and watched as Hiigara got glassed because I didn't know Sajuuk had a giant cannon on it.

  Na, I'm full of shit, I was laughing at that point. But Sakura from Tsubasa chronicals. I was all like  'Did... did that just happen? Oh shit!'. Also, the beggining of 'Up' was tragic. Not one, but two deaths.

Spoiler: Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals (click to show/hide)

So partway through the game, the Maxim defeats the big bad, and gets married to another party member.  Things quiet down for a year, they have a kid.  Then the rest of the sinistrals show up.  The married couple and two others go on to fight them.  They succeed of course, Maxim's wife gets killed, he stays behind in the crumbling flying fortress as the other two party members are able to escape.  With the last of his strength, the last big bad changes the movement of the fortress to drop it on the city where Maxim's kid is.  Maxim manages to change it's course to the ocean instead before he dies.

Then cue to the ending.  Their spirits float over the world and visit all the places they went to while alive.  Everyone continues on like NOTHING HAPPENED.  One of your party members throws a party and talks like Maxim is coming anyways.  They're all in denial that both him and his wife are dead.  The last place they pass over is their home.  Their kid cries out for his mom, and the nanny shushes him saying they'll be back soon.  And then they both fly up in the air and disappear.

If you don't believe it could be that horrible, go ahead and see for yourself.

Also, Eddard Stark's decapitation. You know shit gets real when a main character dies.

I know it's old, but yeah. That sucked. Good way to set the tone for the rest of the series though...

I remember that. I'd just gotten back into the series as well. I heard it's because the network went "HA, CANCELED" And then the writers said "Fuck it, kill 'em."

Until the ending, when maxim flies over his hometown and she starts crying and doesn't know why while happy music plays.  Seriously the ending is full of horrible feelings and happy peaceful music.

She stays with the party and eventually hooks up with Dekar.  I haven't beaten it yet, but Dekar does sacrifice himself against Idura like in the original.

From the first line, the 1st time I went into that wretched hell hole... hearing her request, I left.  I did not savor putting her to her final rest.
