I wish to build a fortress that hangs from the sky!
« on: February 20, 2011, 04:20:15 pm »

(for some reason the sky provides support, please never fix this Toady)

Will this work? ("work" in this case being defined as "not cave in and not be blocked off")
Code: [Select]
Z=MAX
.....
.....
.>I+>
.....
.....
destroy the floor tile when skyfort is self-sufficient

Z-1
.....
+++..
+<+.X
+++..
.....
<-- rest of fort is that way

Z-2, -3, etc
.....
.....
....X
.....
.....
all the way to ground level

And for that matter, can one build farm plots (after irrigation, of course) on constructed floors?

Because if those two things are settled, it'll be a "simple" matter of actually building the thing.

One cannot farm irrigated constructed floor,  one can however build walls down from the sky support pilliar, attach to an area of soil on the ground then channel around and under the supported area so that it is no longer part of the ground.    conversely one can farm one layer below the sky by flooding it with magma then water then irrigating the "natural" obsidian left behind.

Why couldn't my vampire Hammerer eat someone useless, like a migrant? Instead, she went after my only gemcutter.. but sadly there were no witnesses, so I convicted someone's pet duck as the murderer.  It got off easy, with no beatings or jail time.  >.<

Who told you that? Water creates mud on anything. It'll be always considered aboveground though. You can grow aboveground crops only in not freezing climate. As for sky hanging:
I've nailed things to the sky with obsidian and/or supports, and it won't work.

Code: [Select]
  I
 _██

will collapse to look like this:

  I
  █

and this:
   █
   I
   █
   ██

will collapse to look like this:
   █
   I
   █
   █

The "magic sky support" doesn't transmit horizontally, only vertically. It also caused my 40d game to crash eventually unless I loaded the seasonal autosave and then reconnected the "skyhook" to the ground.

Ah, damn.

Oh well. I have a plan B. Not as glitchy-awesome, but still a hanging fort, so good enough for me.
Code: [Select]
side view, W = wall, G = ground
 WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
 W       W
 W       W
 W       W    fort goes here
 W       WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
 W
 . arbitrary
 . number
 . of z-levels
 W
 W     some stairs
 W    or something
 W     for access
 W

You could make the entire ceiling of your fort made with Supports.  Not sure how that'd work...

Can't you just turn off cave ins?

Even though the sky provides a limited form of support, that support won't spread where you need it to according to the !!SCIENCE!! books I've read.  So you can either weaponize the sky (every bit of floor has a support on top of it, link those to a lever in some formation for controlled cave-ins), or you have to build a tower, then a long floor, then a support attached to *that* floor from below, which holds your entire fortress up.

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

I'll take all of the above.  Weaponized complete forts.

On the other hand, why should this be "fixed"?  It's such an obscure thing that it would take serious effort for someone to exploit it.  It's not like the atom smasher, which can be accidentally used, or any other various exploits.  This is a quasi-feature that must be actively sought out and makes you restructure your entire fortress to utilize.
