AHH BEES, THEY'RE IN MY FORTRESS
« on: February 20, 2011, 01:54:58 pm »

Bees are wonderful. I'm pleased as punch to have them in the game; I love honey and their fuzzy cuteness is always lifts my spirits! I also have some plans for bee based traps...

But, wonderful as they are, currently it is a very Fun idea to incorporate them into your fortress early on. How Fun? Well, bees are worth two dorfbucks each. They come in at ten thousand a swarm. For every swarm you add to your fort, you accrue twenty k dorfbucks.

Massively inflated wealth is all fun and games until a Goblin Ambush appears over the horizon and twenty gobbos come out to meet your single squad of leather clad, wood wielding dorfs.

Seriously, unless you're in the mood for an extra Fun start, don't start building beehives until you've got a functioning, armed military and enough traps to seriously slow any offense.

What if you make all the hives at the entrance to your fort, so many that they kill all the goblins that run by?

Ever been stung by a bee?  Did you die of it?

Now imagine an armored goblin stung by a bee.  Yeah, not even gonna slow him down.

Ever been stung by OVAR 9000 bees at once? Did you die?

If you can GET 9,001 bees to sting at once, then I'll agree to bees as defense, but they seem to be slow to swarm and only sting a few a time.

Have you ever been stung by thousands of bees with venom that causes complete necrosis?

considering the low value of mead and wax products bees do seem awfully overvalued.  On the other hand, it can be a fun way to summon the goblins when one wishes to I suppose.

Quote from: file changes.txt
[HIVE_PRODUCT:<max in hive>:<timer>:<item/mat tags>]

not sure what this means, default bee is
   [HIVE_PRODUCT:1:201600:TOOL:ITEM_TOOL_HONEYCOMB:LOCAL_CREATURE_MAT:WAX]
   [HIVE_PRODUCT:1:201600:LIQUID_MISC:NONE:LOCAL_CREATURE_MAT:ROYAL_JELLY]
perhaps this could be exploited to lower the pop of hives... i'm off to test it

That appears to be the max number of that item.  IE, only one honeycomb per hive at any given time.  Not the max number of bees.

You could change the symptom of the bee's sting to something along the lines of... Mass paralysis and necrosis?

Until we get Beekeeper suits, that's a great way to weaponize them against beekeepers.

And when you build your fortress walls from the bones of skeletal elephants, slain my weapons forged from melted goblin plunder, fed on cattle that graze on grass that blinks.  Then, you will know dwarfdom.

And animals... though that DOES give me some interesting ideas for limiting Catsplosions... create a separate kind of bee that has lethal stings... build a few hives... designate a pasture just for cats...

[PET_VALUE:0] counts as nothing, and like any "broken" or misspelled token, will be omitted, and default to a value of 1.  If the solution were that easy, it would have been broadcasted by now.

other "value" tokens work with 0's, why wouldn't this one? are there any reports of failed attempts?
and it's PETVALUE, without underscore
