[DF2020] What'll be going on in your adventure?
« on: February 20, 2011, 01:00:38 pm »

Alt. title: make your own PowerGoal.
Imagine what adventures it will be possible to have in DF after ten (ok, nine) more years of development.

Example:
"After early years of fighting bandits and horrible monsters adventurer suffers a wound and uses his saved money to buy a farm. With years his wealth and influence grows and eventually he is able to put a weak lord so much in his debt that merchant becomes effectively the ruler of the land. However, one fine day youngster with a sword attacks adventurer, exclaiming "My name is Asu Bridleflowered. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
It turns out that he is son of a bandit killed by adventurer. Merchant attempts to dissuade youngster with speech on morality and promises of wealth but does not succeed and is slain."

FIRST  BLOOD
You visit your friend who fought in your squad in The War of Anguish in 275, but find that he has died. On the way back, you are stopped by the captain of the guard who hastily escorts you out of town.

ANIMAL RIGHTS
The Lord gives you a quest to kill a dragon who has killed 683 in his lust for murder. You take several soldiers with you and successfully defeat the dragon. Back in town, the townspeople attack you for causing the extinction of dragons.

Goal 387-

"Adventurer Bob accidentally murders a household of individuals. Unable to turn from his life of crime, Bob joins a small bandit camp. He and his two partners begin to raid small caravans going in and out of the adjacent town. A few months later, Bob feels confident enough to steal from a large caravan heading into the town. He succeeds with minor casulties. His infamy grows, and his camp swells to 20 skilled bandits. They pillage a small town, and murder all of the inhabitants. their number grows to 25. Al evil in the world greatly respects them for villanous acts. Bob strikes a deal with some Goblins, and gets 2 beak dogs and a cave crocodile as mounts. Using this, they raid a hamlet. They successfully pillage the entire town, loosing only 2. The camp grows to 30 bandits. Feeling confident, Bob raids a castle, attempting to grab the untold riches there. e succeeds, at the cost of 10 bandits. 2 goblin prisoners join, making the roster count 22. One underling becomes jealous of Bob, and performs a mutiny. Bob is killed and his head is stuck on a pike."

Single-threaded molasses of doom

My character has every blood platelet in his body simulated, and DF is still single-threaded. One step in adv. mode takes a day of computation on my latest 32-core intel rig, using just a thin sliver of its computing potential. I take a pistol and put it to my head. Goodbye cruel world! Goodbye DF that could have been!

At least spell my name right.

My character is the captain of a pirate ship and he raids ports and sinks trade ships. Then a storm sinks his ship and he dies with the rest of his crew.

Aw. You mean he cant be rescued by mermaids, wash up on a distant shore, and become adopted as a prince by its benevolent ruler?

not if he tries to carry all his gold with him and drowns. A captain always goes down with his ship!

I wonder if you might be able to command a fleet of ships someday... Then they'd all get eaten by a giant octopus

"Adventurer Stan rides his boat across the ocean, towards unknown and distant lands. He is then suddenly flung from his boat into the water as a giant tentacle forms out of the water, striking and destroying his boat. He is then promptly eaten, by the Megabeast; Urist Mc-Kraken, the rape-scourge."

Pssh. You just didn't level up swimming enough. At Legendary level fishing, hunting, and swimming you can catch a whale shark, tame it, and then ride it to shore... as long as you don't have any open cuts or blood coatings spreading in the water. Then you're just screwed unless you have master wrestling against the kraken.

In The year 468 Urist McGeneral stands in The Plains of Anguish
He looks at his army, 20 footsoldiers....10 cavalry....he then looks upon the goblin army they were sent to destroy he saw 50 goblins all footsoldiers and he thought "This battle is as good as won"

he gives the command get in positions and immediately his footsoldiers arrange themselves in a line formation 2 men thick 10 men wide while his cavalry split into two squads both positioned themselves on the flanks of the footsoldiers

"MARCH!" and the army moved forward in unison, the cavalry moved farther and farther away from the flanks as they come closer to the goblin army

the goblin army poured onto the footsoldiers in a mad rampage Urist's men is having a having a hard time holding the line
and right about when the formation was about to be destroyed, the cavalry came charging in along with Urist on both flanks!

He had performed the classic pincer maneuver!

Goblin morale dropped, panic ensued and the little fuckers retreat
