I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

I always imagined this, that metal walls would take longer to break down in comparison to all other forms, and of course walls built of spoiler being the one indestructible thing.

I wouldn't really mind AI digging in that case, if:
A: They didn't ZOMG MAIM the surface
B: This digging didn't result in ZOMG FPSDROP in an game already suffering in that regard
C: Built things could be smoothed and *engraved* just like rock so this didn't ruin the OCD-like structure of my carefully designed forts, post-repair
