I can't stop the images from loading under the spoiler tags, but I did switch from png to jpg for new images. It reduced the size of the images, but the pics are slightly blurrier now. I also made the images a bit smaller.

Welcome back to Let's Play Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup!

Here we are in the Orcish Mines. This place is a bunch of disconnected mines going 4 levels deep. And it's filled with gold! Shops can appear here, unlike the Lair, and there is a ton of orcish equipment.

A plain-looking elven fighter who is technically brilliant in many forms of combat, but over-confident because of it. She is complemented by the magical skills of her twin brother, Dowan.

Duvessa is a spell-less elven fighter who is always with her magician brother, Dowan. They're very close to each other and won't leave the other behind to chase you to another level. This means you can easily escape them as long as you don't kill a sibling.



Duvessa summoned a small abomination with a scroll of summoning. Not that it helped her much. Abominations are deformed freaks of nature with randomized AC, EV, and speed. They also have demonic resistances.

Anyway, when you kill one of the sibling the other will receive a power-up the next time you encounter them. Killing Dowan first causes his sister to go berserk (one time only) upon seeing you.



Dowan's bio:

A beautiful but vain elf with an aptitude for magic and little else. His skills are the perfect complement of his twin sister Duvessa's fighting prowess.

Killing Duvessa first causes him to "find hidden reserves of power", which means his conjurations receive a huge upgrade and he becomes hasted (all actions are 50% faster)! Doesn't matter, since I can still mop the floor with this pansy wizard.   



Not a single hit.  If you had a wand of enslavement you could make Duvessa kill her brother (causing her to go insane from guilt). Then, make Duvessa clear the level for you as a berserk slave, then finally put her out of her misery. It's deliciously cruel!



You rarely see an orc knight or warriors on the 1st level. I must be lucky.



I killed the orc knight and a few orcs, before retreating back to the dungeon.



I managed to poison kite that orc to death while slowed down.



I went down the stairs near the exit. This is where it leads to. You don't have to explore every part of the mines, just find the entrance to the Elven Halls and the stairs to all 4 levels.



I'm grabbing all the light armors and swords that I can find. Maybe I'll find something useful.



Oh! An armor shop!



I'm not amused, Crawl. I wish I was playing a dwarf. Oh well, I brought the two enchanted robes for 33 gold.




Finally, I got a long blade! It's not the brand that I wanted, but at least it isn't a short blade.



I see an altar of Beogh, god of orcs. What better way to show Trog's superiority than by killing and sacrificing Beogh's followers next to his altar. 



I tested robes and leather armor I got. One of them was a robe of magic resistance. It should be useful against orc wizards.

There are too many enemies here, so I back upstairs and took another staircase down.



This place is probably worse, but the orcs are close enough.



I went berserk, killed a few orcs, headed upstairs, and killed the rest.



Getting hit with a halberd of venom really hurts. I should probably dispose of it.



There are a lot of orcs down here. This time I didn't need to retreat.



I love the aftermath of a bloody rampage!



I used my wand of digging to connect these two parts of the level.



I managed to sneak around this pillar and attack the casters first.



I looted the corpses and ate a few orc chunks before moving on.



Here we are on the last level of the orcish mines. On my left is a weapons shop and on my right are a couple of sleeping orcs. At this point I can one-shot these guys.



I brought the long sword and bow. The bow is grayed out, meaning I can't use it. I already know its the Storm Bow (due to the description), so I want to add it to my collection.



The long sword has the holy wrath brand, which does 75% more damage against demons and the undead. I would have preferred the flaming or electrocution brand.



 



Dik-Dik: "Hey buddy, you see all those ogres with the nasty spiked clubs? Kill 'em all! Or at least distract them while I flee in terror."

Raging hill giant: "ME SMASH!!"

Dik-Dik: "Very good."



Sadly, my hill giant didn't last too long against the dozens of ogres ganging up on him. 4 of the ogres manage to catch up to me pretty quickly. Two-headed ogres are basically beefier ogres who can duel wield giant clubs. It's as painful as it sounds.



One hit kills for each of them.



...And another quickblade from Trog.



Ah. These ogres were hanging around all those shops in the middle of the vault. I didn't notice while running away. 



Armor shop #1 doesn't have anything I'm interested in.



I might buy a few scrolls from here.



Nothing I want here.



I brought the artifact animal skin {rElec MR Dam+3 Stlth++} and the robe of fire resistance.



I identified the bow with a scroll. Why? Fully identified stuff is worth more points, when you ascend with them in your inventory. A higher score is always nice. Anyway, this is a very unique bow. It's the only one in the game with the elec brand and it causes rain clouds to randomly appear near you, like the robe of clouds.

This looks interesting. The red fuming stuff is lava. Fall in it and you'll die instantly, unless you have fire resistance. If you do? Then, you might be able to scramble free at the cost of massive damage and losing a lot of scrolls. I put on my ring of levitation and hovered across the lava.



This dark tunnel leads to a volcano! It's a fire-themed portal vault that explodes in flame clouds every once in awhile. The loot isn't very good, so don't worry if you miss it.



Lots of fire. I better stick to the walls.



Flying skulls are fast, flying undead monsters that like to shriek noisily whenever they wake up. They're supremely annoying bastards who'll alert everything nearby that you're around. Thankfully, I'm sneaky enough to avoid waking it up.



This place has a lot of skeletons. I thought that this place would have a few fire monsters. Not that I'm complaining.



I summoned a troll to deal with the mummy. It ended up killing everything in the vault.



The only loot in this place is gold. This was kinda pointless. 



I returned to the mines and brought a magic mapping scroll to reveal the rest of the level.



I created a passageway to this area and encountered Nergalle!

Nergalle's bio:

A withered sorceress, exceptionally ugly even by orc standards.

In 0.7, Nergalle was basically a worthless unique. There were barely any difference between her and a regular orc sorcerer. In 0.8, her has a new spell set. She can summon spectral orcs, haste them, and cast bolts of draining through them.



Nergalle managed to summon some orcs before dying.



They were just as easy as her.



Soon afterward, Trog gave me another gift. It looks useful.



In the last unexplored area of this level I ran into a sleeping cyclops. These guys love to hurl boulders at you and hang around flocks of sheep. Too bad you can't blind them and steal their sheep. 



I still haven't found the entrance to the Elven Halls, so I'm looking in different parts of the mines for it.



I found it, but the entrance is near a bunch of spellcasting elves. Bah! I'll take a pic of it when I return.



I continued to check out these secluded places throughout the mines. There's nothing really interesting in these areas.



This is the last place in the mines that I'll be exploring. Still nothing interesting.



Well, getting an artifact sling after slaughtering a bunch of mooks isn't a bad way to end a branch!

Alright, it's time to choose where I'll go!

- Go to the Swamp, Snake Pit, or Slime Pits.
- Continue exploring the main dungeon.

I vote that we continue with the dungeon, at least until we find a poison resist item. Then swamps or Snake pit (although probably not the last level of either of them, those are really nasty).

Slime pits are way outside of our power level right now.

There's a swamp dragon armor for sale if we get desperate. I'd at least buy those +2 gloves. It's not like you're short on cash right now and that 3 AC is really nice.

I vote for heading down into Vaults.

Personally, I'd raid the first level of Snake.  I beat the entirety of snake without poison resistance before (just killdudesed my way to the rune, clearing all the levels completely). It was sick.  Then again, I was a level 23 HOPr with an amulet of rage and 27 axe skill.  Anyway, the moral of the story is that you can survive in snake without poison resistance.  After that? Head down D.  Swamp is annoyingly deadly without poison resistance, or at least clarity.  Nothing more embarrassing than death by drowning!

He has a ring of levitation, so drowning is less than likely.
