I Appear To Be F00ked
« on: February 19, 2011, 05:17:33 am »

Here's the situation...

There's one way into the walled off area around my fortress. There's at least 2 ambushes waiting outside with some of their caged comrades, so I closed the door on them. All well and good, except I have elven traders in the depot who I want to let out, and although I don't particularly mind them getting slaughtered, the gobbos tend to get inside the fortress...

And that's where my problem is.

I have no military, as I have only iron and not enough fuel. This is easily solved, as I've just uncovered a magma pipe and I'm delving towards the embark-screen-promised flux. But this ISN'T solved in enough time before the traders go mental.

So what options do I have? I must say I'm not afraid of reloading in this instance. Would building a corridor of iron corkscrew traps be feasible? It's use a hell of a lot of iron, and chances are the bowmen would just stand and shoot the elves running out.

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...

You could construct an separate airlock route for the elves.

It's quite hard to construct anything when there's 20 odd bowmen out there...

I'm thinking of constructing a pathway of cage traps, so...

Then the goblins should all be captured before they get in sight of anyone.

Nonesense, you'd build it underground. The ramps leading to the surface, and as away as you can get from the bowmen, are the last part to be dug out.

Not a bad idea. Except it may ruin my building plans later. Well I'll try cage traps. Thent hat if it doesn't work.

Or you can just wall them in for now and drown them at your earliest convenience. You might need a replacement depot in the time being but such are the trials of running a fortress.

Meh, I've managed to get rid of them by building a bridge onto the other side of a river. I'll set up cages now and prepare to mine some more goblinite.

i am unable to grasp the concept of somebody actually caring about what happens to the elves... i would have at least gone with what arzzult suggested

As I said, it's less me caring about the elves, and more me not wanting gobbos in my fort. At least they've gone now. I'm busy drafting everyone into the mechanic force to make me more cage traps!

Plus, with these goblins running around, I've sustained only 2 wounds. Both fish cleaners who got unfortunately shot, one got some nasty scars, the other has successfully been sutured and dressed, neither in a position of permanent harm. Which is nice really.

For future reference traders will quite happily leave through the caverns.

I've never seen them do this. Do they really?

I'm sure I've noticed that sieges will eventually fuck off back home if left on their own long enough. Besieging people that can grow food indoors and actually vomit when they see sunlight was never a sensible long-term strategy.

To add on the concept of being fooked, I have no metal. None. So I have to import all of it. Any ideas?

Don't forget to import things made of metal too, like cages, toys, stuff like that, so you can melt it down.

Obsidian farming comes into its own in .19. Obsidian short swords might not be that good versus goblins, but if you build enough weapons traps, you can kill the goblins and take their valuable goblinite. I know that doesn't help much when you're under siege, immediately, but take your time to build a maze, fill it with weapons traps, and then connect the maze to the outside world. Of course cage traps will neutralise the goblins quicker, but setting up remote release cages and an arena with which you can execute the captured goblins from a safe distance with lots and lots of cheap bolts is probably even more time consuming.

Still, you're locked in, you've got the time on your hands.

I once had human traders leave my fortress through a part of the caverns that lead to the edge of the map, maybe the elves will take the low route out too if you poke a hole in the caverns?
