I saw the trailer ( on the Tobuscus Youtube channel ) and the graphics and everything looked awesome.  I want actual players of the game, when it's released, to post in this thread about the actual gameplay and if it was fun or not.  We need that sort of input before the more skeptical and reluctant of us spend our money.

I have a very keen generalising sense and can usually accurately sum up the experience of a game after looking at it for a small time. (I have been wrong... ohh have I been wrong)

My biggest fear of the game is that it could be what I call "Mildly dull"

Okay, looking over the videos, I've decided not to get this. If it were 15-20USD, I might consider it, but as it stands, it looks a lot like Borderlands to me. Not in terms of gameplay, but in terms of how it will go. I'll get it, play it for a week or two, get full completion a few times, and then never touch it again because I've already done and seen everything. This is the problem for RPGs that try to be sandboxy but don't actually do it; the plot is linear enough that I know exactly what to expect in a replay, but it isn't so linear that it can be fun just by being hack-slash arcady style fun, which is what L4D did for me.

Again, Cataclysm is a great example of what I like in sandbox RPGs: Absolutely no direction or plot; you just do your own thing and have fun doing it.

Put simply, games like this are fun once(IMO), and then they are never fun again(IMO), because there is too much freedom for you to just run through and have fun killing things(with friends), and too little for you to while away days puttering around doing your own thing.

I got this in a 4Pack with a friend. I'll post my thoughts once it's out, but for now, suffice it to say that I'm really freaking excited for this game.

Does anyone other then me think that this is a game where it changed dirrection while in production?

For example Boarderlands was going for a much more serious story originally... but decided not to.

I think the same thing happened with Dead Island.

That may be so, but remember that Borderlands wholeheartedly embraced the silliness that it decided to pursue. This was not a bad thing; in fact I remember laughing out loud at several moments (mostly involving Claptrap).

Dead Island, on the other hand, seems to be trying to mix a "serious" setting with bizarrely over-the-top weapons and zombies. It's a weird contrast.

I got the pre-order at the weekend and its all set to roll on a pre-load, but i doubt i will be using the items you get with it, as always with free items it tends to make you too powerfull early on in the game.

im thinking of writing a kind of diary of events in the game as a kind of Zombie survivor ramblings, this will be based on if there are enough events happening to be even a slightly interesting read.

I suppose if i did it could be used by others to determine if its the right game for them.

Actually on the contrary... DeadIsland is also a silly setting OUTSIDE THE AWSOME INTRO THAT I WISH WAS THE GAME!

Really? Forgetting about the fact that they've kept the sad theme music and the hanging dude logo, the characters seem much more subdued than the Vault Hunters and there are mature themes such as drugs and alcohol.

As an aside, I am watching a walkthrough of the fist couple of levels, and so far I'm not seeing any non-combat silliness (though apparently you can kill zombies by kicking them repeatedly).

Here's the first video of the walkthrough I mentioned:

Sadly, no zombie killing until the second video, but this one has some more background information.

I must have a different version than a lot of the angry trolls out there. I am not experiencing any glaring bugs and it performs well on my outdated laptop. I played during my travel today and everyone was climbing around trying to watch. It is a pretty decent game.

disclaimers: I am apparently playing the wrong release candidate that steam delivered. Not all computers are running it well without tweaking some settings. I am not you so my opinion doesn't have a bearing on your experience. I did not like it for the first 15-20 minutes and had to force myself to continue on. Now I have to force myself to stop playing and get back to work.

not fixed. Hear it is actually more problematic right now. Typical with week 1 releases it seems these days.
