Let's Play Zeus: Master of Olympus! Not Dead Yet!
« on: February 18, 2011, 07:50:27 pm »

Let's Play:
Zeus:
Master of Olympus

So what is this game? It's one of the many great city-building sims from Impressions Games. This particular game focuses on building the cities of, you guessed it, ancient Greece, complete with a Disneyfied version of Greek mythology.

Watch the intro.

(The city of Argos. This screenshot is at 800x600 resolution. I could switch to 1024x768 and display more of the city on-screen at once, if nobody minds.)

I am the great leader Boksistos and I implore the residents of the twelfth bay to aid me in ruling our soon-to-be glorious city! Normally I'd just handle everything myself, but...

(If you really want, I can pick other adventures, but keep in mind I've only played the first two)

Athens is a democracy, isn't it? So you get a say in everything. And I do mean everything. Of course, if nobody cares I'll just do whatever I deem to be best. And remember, we aren't going to doom the city if only one person wants to, only if a lot of people do.

Love Pharoah/Zues/Middle kingdom :D In fact I think Zeus has to be my favorite one.

I demand a sheep farm and house.

Though I dislike Athens and wish we could run it into the ground I accept your choice, as the game comes up I may or may not demand things.

Loved Caesar III and Pharaoh.

I request a pointy stick, some sand and a large flat surface.
Because those six markets are built in the worst possible configuration ever, and this city will need water supplies via aqueducts, and road efficiency, and harbors...

(Here you can see the current goals and a brief story. Take note of those goals, they're currently impossible. I'll explain why late, if you don't already know. I'm currently playing on Hero difficulty, which is basically Normal.)

So here we are. This is where we will found the glorious city of Athens!

This is the minimap. The yellow stuff is normal ground, gray stuff is cliffs(those are both plateus), green stuff is forest, blue stuff is water(rivers, in this case), purple stuff is fertile meadow and white lines are roads.

And right now we can build diddly-squat. Well, we can build some things, but not a lot. This isn't a full-on tutorial where I'll show you every tab, but I'm going to show you how limited our options are:

The only food we can have is cheese from goats. Goats need to graze fertile meadowland to produce milk. Dairies send out goatherds to protect and milk said goats.

We have no industrial options at all. We can still adjust our wage rate, though. Lower wages means we pay less, because apparently the entire city is on our payroll, and less people will look for work in general, which somehow reduces unemployment. Raising wages works in the opposite manner.

We cannot build a palace and tax our population, not that we have any at this point. This means we will have to rely on trade for all of our income. But we have 15000 drachmas in the treasury, so it should last a while.

We do have some cultural options available. We can build colleges to train philosophers and podiums for them to preach from. We can also build acting schools and theaters for the resulting actors. This is enough culture to meet our goal of "500 people in homestead". But they also need material goods: food, water and fleece.

Our goals are still impossible, right? Wait, maybe we can trade with some of our neighbors?

As you can see, we have two allies, Corinth and Sparta, as indicated by the red dotted lines. Those red dotted lines are trade routes, land trade routes. Unfortunately, neither one wants to trade at all with us. Delos, Knossos, Hattusas and Sardis are our rivals: They don't like us and won't trade. Erythia is an enchanted place and only relevant for quests. And all those other little "button-cities"? They're inactive, not interacting with the world at large. And there's a lot of them, because that's the theme of this adventure.

So, where are we going to build, and what?

Houses and herders to live in them.

And goats. Lots and lots of goats.

Dear governor,
I represent the Guild of Goat Herders.
It has come to our attention that there is a severe lack of goats in your city. We demand that some provision is made for people to join the glorious employment that goat herding provides.

Signed...... Deadmeat1471, head of the G.G.H.

*Makes due with a broken branch and a patch of mud, and begins scribbling.*
Now... About three 2*2 housing plots, watered by wells, along the road leading to the fertile ground for the goat farms, but close to the lake with the large island. Having a natural water supply will help later on, I believe, and it will keep housing away from noisy, stinky goat farms.

So it seems people want goats and goatherds. So we'll build some dairies in the top left corner, near the meadow, and put some goats there. But we need people most of all. Shall we go with my newest housing-block design, or do you want something else?

Also, I just remembered, they're called Fountains, not Wells.

@Something Evil: I don't see any lake with a large island, there's only rivers. You're probably thinking of the Acropolis. And remember, Zeus doesn't function exactly like Pharaoh or Caesar.

Stone throwing is an ancient and powerful fighting style. It has defended man from predators for time immemorial. I remember reading a passage from Gunnlaugs saga ormstungu where Gunnlaugur kills several of the men charging at him up a hill by throwing stones at them. These men had shields, too. Don't underestimate a thrown stone.

But yeah, it's still not a very cool way to fight.
