Later on youll most likely have acess to starships, however at the start not, im currently writing up the rules and all that.
However, therell be 3 main kinds of units
Soldiers
Scientists
Others
(SSS system for the win)
Soldiers have 4 skills, Combat Efficiency, Stealth, Observation and Social (CE, ST, OB, SO).
For example if you want to make contact to a unknown race youre more likely to assign a squad with soldiers that have high social/observation skills, if you await combat to take place you send soldiers with high CE and so on.
Scientists have 3 skills: Knowledge, Intelligence, Research
Knowldege indicates how well they can understand alien technology, Intelligence how good they are in inventing/combining new with old stuff and Research is how good they are in exploring other races.
Example: One of youre squads brought alien technology with them, you assign some scientists good in Knowledge to research it.
You want to use new energy cores to be used in youre weapons, so you get some Scientists good in Intelligence together
You send a squad out to make contact with a new race, as you want to find out what kind of technology have you send a "Researcher" with them.
Others: People with special skills, this can be base-operators or any other kind of person you could think off, their skills will most likely be a mix or completely new ones.
Also if you train soldiers they can randomly get proffesions, this could be something like Sniper/Recon expert or anything the like. Getting new units works the way that each player can send "requests" to the government, those can be fullfilled or not depending on the actual thing. Each player will have his own units, those can be put together with the units from others to one squad (Teamplay will be needed if you dont want to be crushed" Whahaha!, really, in the beginning youll only start out with youre "hero" and you dont want to go out there alone
)
