Oh, but that's different.  It would have been weird to call them out like that.

I would have just smiled at them, and that would have been that.  Or maybe I would have said "I'm glad that people are acting in the spirit of kindness in this age."

... This is why I would probably just go with smiling.

I don't compliment people that often, as I said, and since my instinct is to say crap like that I just smile at them and treat them more nicely later.

Rather, I give out superficial compliments verbally when I think of them, but I hardly ever give out "real" ones.  When I do, I usually try to phrase them differently than that.
