Grass Stockpile

It looks like food stockpiles now have the option to hold grasses, but there would seem to be no way to harvest grass yet.

Can't I get my mechanic to build a lawnmower or something?

Haymaking isn't implemented yet.

Animals eat now, which requires pasture zones.  This is an issue for people, because it makes them look like hippies with grassy forts, grazing wildlife, and colorful mushrooms in their forts.  As soon as haymaking is possible and you can produce hay for animals to eat, you can suspect a lot of the world to burn itself clean with a little dwarven aid, returning to the thick, forge-warmed stone we all know and love.

Yeah, all my bunnies are starving to death now because their pasture zones is inside (near the butcher).
I don't really care, it's the best way to kill pets without too much effort.

My butcher wouldn't butcher the animals who starved themselves to death :(  What is this, some sort of dwarven taboo? Also seems a little silly that animals won't go outside and eat when they're starving even if I didn't give them permission to. Self-preservation instincts and all that.

My butcher wouldn't butcher the animals who starved themselves to death :(  What is this, some sort of dwarven taboo? Also seems a little silly that animals won't go outside and eat when they're starving even if I didn't give them permission to. Self-preservation instincts and all that.

I haven't played it yet, but I'm guessing you have to designate a grazing zone in the zones menu.

Yes, you do, even if they have access to just walk outside and hunt food by themselves.

It's very sensible that you can't butcher starved animals. If an animal's dead from starvation, you can't expect to get much nutrition from its corpse!

Although you should be able to get bones etc.

Of course, since he doesn't actually walk around counting things, we can only assume that bookkeeping time is spent in deep meditation, psychically sensing exactly how many piles of orthoclase there are. It takes a while to hone a skill like that.

I think it's based on the death circumstances, that any non-butcher dead of an animal prevents butchering.  Like, any animal that falls, gets spiked, or killed by another creature, and is owned by you, cannot be butchered.  Not entire sure why it's set up that way...

Well, I did see someone run out and grab a dead ice wolf for butchering, but it may have been killed by a hunter or something. Come to think of it, I've also seen them butcher a forgotten beast which certainly wasn't killed by a hunter. Forgotten beast soap is the best.

Butchering things that starve to death seems perfectly reasonable as long as they haven't had time to rot. They still have to have some meat, and dwarves eat stuff like prepared rhesus macaque lung so I'm pretty sure they wouldn't mind roadkill.

As I clarified, things that are owned by you.  A tame animal dropped off a death tower will be buried or stockpilied.  A wild animal death-towered will be butchered for meat.
