So yeah, was digging through the caverns o get at the delicious magma, when suddenly I pierce the second cavern layer and this message pops up. I think the passage is shown on the screen, if so what does it lead to?

I saw this message, too. It seems that it's about small passages between cavern layers. You can center the screen ('z') when looking 'a'nnouncements.

Yeah, just sent in a migrant, turns out it's a direct passage to the next cavern layer.

Better Idea: block off all passageways between caverns to limit FB wandering.

The last thing you want is for a FB to disappear for a year, only to enter your fortress through your garbage chute.

I've had this too, except it lead two z levels down and then nothing.
I also had a similar problem with discovering a different kind of downward passage, but actually having to mine to expose it, meh.

just build ONE loom and turn ONE dwarf on to weaving and nothing else.
designate a LARGE area near the loom to hold cloth and in time, you'll have that whole cavern explored without having to touch another key, as that one dwarf looks through every inch of that cavern, looking for more spider silk to harvest.

to speed the process up, add more dwarves and more looms.
