Mead? Mead!? MEAAAAAD?!!
« on: February 18, 2011, 03:11:59 am »

Right, so, being the viking that I am, the biggest thing that struck me about this update was the addition of Bees (And therefore, honey, which leads to the glory of...) and MEAD.

But with 8 hives going full tilt, I've yet to have a harvest of "honeycombs" or "royal jelly", disregarding the pile of jugs around the hives waiting to be filled.

So, anyone have success with mead and honey so far?

 Anything to note?

How much mead is made from one pressing of the honeycomb?

Mead is the dwarfiest drink, and, incidentally, one of the oldest alcoholic beverages ever made.

Incidentally, I'm planning on making my latest fortress run on mead, but I too am having troubles with the new beekeeping system.

Keep in mind that mead means farming isn't as substantial.  Since we have an alternative source of booze at last, we also have a way to cast aside farm plots.  Several bee hives and some animals to slaughter can sustain the fort without plants.

I last heard that mead is the oldest natural occurring alcohol known to man Dwarf.

It goes like this.

Tree grows in the plains somewhere.
Lightning hits, and splits, the tree.
Bees build hive in the split tree.
Rain comes, floods the hive.
Honey Water ferments in tree.
Random monkey finds tree, drinks mead, gets wasted.

Edit: Also! My random jeweler decided to go crazy and make a golden gem bucket. IT SHALL BE THE FINEST DRINKING VESSEL IN THE LANDS FOR THE HOLIEST OF MEADS. If I ever get the damn bee's to work, anyway.

As far as I can tell, you always only ever get one honey (so 5 drinks) per hive. I read somewhere else the max number of hives you can have is 40.

Assuming half the hives for splitting and the other half for making mead, and assuming you can harvest once per season (I don't think you can harvest them this much though) that's only 100 drinks per season. Dwarves require 4 drinks per season, so best case that's only ~25 dwarves you can sustain with beehives (less due to inefficiency).

The numbers get worse if you can't actually harvest every season, and I'm pretty sure you can't. It's possible you get more honey from skilled beekeepers but I haven't noticed more then one, ever, yet.

Yes, the problem with milk is that the time it takes for a cow to be ready for a milking again after being milk is pretty absurd (I think it's almost half a year).  When I tried to recalculate how much milk a medieval cow would produce, adjusted for the size of what I expected a given dwarf's meal size would be, I think I came up with a cow producing "one serving" of milk per 3 days, not the current 167.

Bees seem to be the same way - they are so unproductive as to be nearly meaningless so far.

Frankly, I would rather slaughter my now-pasture-dependant animals and keep my farms and vegan dwarves, since it's so much less of a headache.

Yeah, but Dwarves only eat a few times a year, don't they?

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Wait, I'm fairly certain you can milk creatures once a month - I know I milked my water buffalos twice over a 2 month period. Bee hives, I think I read somewhere that you need close to a year to get them ready after a hive is set up.
