There's letters seal'd: and my two schoolfellows,
Whom I will trust as I will adders fang'd,
They bear the mandate; they must sweep my way
    And marshal me to knavery. Let it work;
For 'tis the sport to have the enginer
Hoist with his own petar; and 't shall go hard
But I will delve one yard below their mines
And blow them at the moon: O, 'tis most sweet,
When in one line two crafts directly meet.

Hamlet. - Urist mcshakespere

That's petard not retard

Any guy willing to run up to a castle wall with a box of boom has something wrong with them if you ask me.

Yeah, there's someone with the ability to force them to run up to a castle wall with a box of boom. That's something wrong right there.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

Well yes, that too. Either way, somebody has something wrong with them.

Sounds like it includes cats and thermonuclear reactions. Also lots of cats.

Urist Mcdemoman + Goblin Castle = Goblinite for all. The best way to mine it.

The quote "hoist by his own petard" suddenly comes to mind.

And yet that quote would be a myriad times more relevant if my correcting people ever stemmed from the presumption of infallibility, or if I even tended to be an asshole about it.

I thought this was what everyone did?  Jobs heavily dependent on skill, such as masonry, carpentry, mechanics, blacksmithing, armorsmithing, etc, anything that creates items with quality-levels, basically, is done by specialists with their hauling labors disabled..while everything else, building walls with masonry, melting ore, etc, is handled by my throngs of peasants, worthless dwarves with hauling labors and all skill-less labors enabled.

This makes it very easy to draft an 'oh-shit army', just draft every last worthless peasant while hiding away the valuable masters.

Using dwarf therapists custom job feature, which actually labels the useless dwarves peasants as well, makes this approach even handier!

A myriad? You're the "grammar guy" around here? Myriad isn't a noun. Not that correcting everyone would give the impression you're an asshole. People love being corrected.

Yes. It is a noun.

No. Said possible asshole didn't use it as a noun, but as an adjective.

Yes. Myriad can also be an adjective.

You don't have to derail a thread just because you want to feel all superior by correcting the local grammar nazi. Bragging about it will only make you look that much more petty.

As for the actual topic, having one dwarf per job only works for jobs where quality matters. Making weapons and armour for the military is the best example. On the other hand, making rock blocks is best left to the unwashed masses of proletarian migrants you have lying around.

I've been compromising with 2 dwarves per quality-sensitive job. The idea here being to get two dwarves trained up to relatively high skill levels so one can continue building stuff while the other is sleeping or boozing it up. For gem cutters and some other jobs where I don't really need speed I just use one.

Then again it seems like it would make sense to go for quality over quantity/speed much of the time, especially when you start ending up with so much crap that you're just donating tons of stuff to extremely happy merchants and foreign leaders just so you can get rid of it.

Seems like for stonecrafting it generally makes sense to have just one stonecrafter. Just one guy can pump out enough stuff to buy out almost everything from every caravan that comes along if he works continuously. (make stone crafts on repeat)
