Visual Basic Help
« on: February 17, 2011, 06:11:02 pm »

I'm taking a Computer Science course that uses Visual Basic 6.  We have five months to make a game. I don't want mine to be shit.

Do you know of any good VB6, especially Game ones?

What are the goals outlined for the class?

Because you should look at those before trying to run off to a fancy modern graphics library.

Visual Basic 6.

Why!?

(Yes, I know it's because your class uses it. They probably shouldn't.)

Drop the class.

This isn't a joke.

I don't have the exact Goals here, but there pretty simple to remember.

Graphics, Aesthetics, Difficulty curve, Multiplayer (Which quite literally means two player co-op.

Outside of those your pretty much free to do anything you can imagine (And then make)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Because my teacher hates you.

Drop the class.

I think I have to refuse on this one, Do-Buddy.

Honestly, now, VB6 is just a horribly outdated language that you will have no use for in the real world. Or in academia, or anywhere else really.

Meh, unless VB6 will somehow destroy the programing parts of mind its probably better then nothing.

When I was in junior college... in, lets see, `98 we used vb 6 for a couple classes.  Does that version of visual studio even run on a modern system these days?

Here is a little thing I learned... If you poke through some of the files generated for vb6 in a text editor (I don't remember which ones), you will find that your program gets "compiled" to c as an intermediate step. Never got around to seeing what hijinks I could get into by editing those files directly.

Depends. Depending on how you learn (or are taught), you can learn some pretty bad habits, and the language can make this better or worse.

Had to emulate XP to get it at home (School computers were, Predictably, perfectly fine)

I survived early exposure to vb6, but many of my classmates did not.  Most of them went on to "careers" in data entry, best buy and tech support.

Would it make you feel better to know that I do want to learn to program, and if VB6 is worse then nothing I'll try again by myself with a Language that isn't shit?

That's the problem: You're going to have to learn something else anyway, because VB6 is trash and not worth using.
