Quote
The interpretation that this was a permanent residence for hunter-gatherers is supported by analysis that Howick is a place where natural resources would have allowed all year round occupation. Its coastal position provided animals, flint for tools, wood for construction and fuel, fish, seals, sea birds and their eggs, shellfish and a nearby source of fresh water that was available at the time of occupation. Many sites from this time are coastal, but the particular circumstances found here and the evidence of ceremonial ritual from the site at Star Carr in Yorkshire, not very far away, are interpreted as indicating that Mesolithic hunter-gatherers were capable of establishing permanent settlements.
From a wiki article on the mesolithic site known as Howick house

It makes sense that if you're not being forced to move by scarcity you'd be likely to stay still.

Depends on the author. I could make it, but I don't want to steal the glory from him :).

Looking cool so far, but I've seen the names. Not very pretty.

Names will, put me off, but it won't stop me from playing it.  :P

eh, maybe "bank balancetub" isn't rng's best work, but the others seem fine

it'd be trivial, if a bit cumbersome, to remove some less fitting words from the language files

Yep, just remove (or better rename, less work; like bank -> cellar) the modern words. Otherwise it's perfect, that's how people were calling each other in the past.

You can do many things. I think it's possible to cull and select name components; this is why Goblin names generally involve "untoward" words that Dwarf names don't.

Here's from the dwarf raws:
Code: [Select]
[SELECT_SYMBOL:WAR:NAME_WAR]
[SUBSELECT_SYMBOL:WAR:VIOLENT]
[SELECT_SYMBOL:BATTLE:NAME_BATTLE]
[SUBSELECT_SYMBOL:BATTLE:VIOLENT]
[SELECT_SYMBOL:SIEGE:NAME_SIEGE]
[SUBSELECT_SYMBOL:SIEGE:VIOLENT]
[SELECT_SYMBOL:ROAD:NAME_ROAD]
[SELECT_SYMBOL:TUNNEL:NAME_TUNNEL]
[SELECT_SYMBOL:BRIDGE:NAME_BRIDGE]
[SELECT_SYMBOL:WALL:NAME_WALL]
[SELECT_SYMBOL:REMAINING:ARTIFICE]
[SELECT_SYMBOL:REMAINING:EARTH]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:DOMESTIC]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:SUBORDINATE]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:EVIL]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:UNTOWARD]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:FLOWERY]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:NEGATIVE]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:UGLY]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:NEGATOR]

I think everything with [CULL/SELECT_SYMBOL:ALL:SOMETHING] will add or remove a symbol class from EVERYTHING, including names.

So you might want to cull:
UNTOWARD
ARTIFICE
ORDER
TRADE
WEALTH

And you will want to select:
NATURE
PRIMITIVE
WILD
SKY

Make sure to select first, then cull, because cull removes the improper entries from the selected ones.

do atlatls fit the time and region? and i'm sure they already had bows in 5000bc

EDIT:
Quote from: wikapedia
The bow seems to have been invented by the late Paleolithic or early Mesolithic. The oldest indication for archery in Europe comes from the Stellmoor in the Ahrensburg valley north of Hamburg, Germany and date from the late Paleolithic about 9000-8000 BC. The arrows were made of pine and consisted of a mainshaft and a 15-20 centimetre (6-8 inches) long foreshaft with a flint point. There are no known definite earlier bows or arrows, but stone points which may have been arrowheads were made in Africa by about 60,000 years ago
