DF reads the wrong init.txt
« on: March 17, 2007, 09:56:00 pm »

Now, I wanted to restrict immigration a bit. No avail, at first. I haven't investigated this too closely, but it appears that the game preferred the backup copy "init.txt~" (mind the ~) to the actual "init.txt" file.

Also, how much over the cap are you?  Nobles don't count towards the cap, and they can come with ordinary dwarves as spouses who also won't contribute towards the cap.

48 Dwarves and not a single noble while the limit was set to 30. And I'm fully aware that deleting the backup file will solve the problem, for now.

This bug report is about the fact that in the year of our Lord 2007, it is no longer safe to assume that there will be at most three characters after the period.

I open it using the "init.txt" filename.  If something strange is going on with the stream, or streams don't use the file names you type, I have no idea how to fix it.  It's possible that this isn't the problem though, since the cap can be fairly soft.

Also, make sure you use the greatest text program ever... NOTEPAD! wordpad/word/openoffice/etc... can change the formatting, and create backups that the SYSTEM may put priority on... now that i think about it, if you used an app that locks a file when it is open (dumb idea IMHO), DF couldn't open to read the init.txt, but may have seen the init.txt~, and therefore used that. make sure you have saved and closed the file before launching DF. Notepad doesn't lock files.

edit: I didn't mean it's a dumb idea to edit using other programs... it's a dumb idea for apps to lock files. if you delete a file WHILE YOU ARE EDITTING IT, that's your own damn fault! sometimes when an app crashes, it doesn't release the file, so it is still locked. General solution, copy the LOCKED file and should be able to open the copy. I run into this all the time at work...

*cough*
http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/emacs/windows/emacs-21.3-fullbin-i386.tar.gz

It's still tarred and gzipped, but IIRC even Winzip can handle this these days. In case of my XP, it however required some mild violence until it finally accepted Emacs as standard app for text files.

EDIT: however, I hear that there's quite a number of other, viable editors out there. For all I know, Emacs may still be the best editor in terms of capabilities, but from a "I want to install and get something done NOW" point of view it leaves much to be desired.

Sure, if you mastered the interface of Dwarf Fortress, you should eventually come to grips with emacs as well. If that's a valid point.

Don't listen to him, he speaks lies and falsehoods! Everyone knows that vi is the only proper text editor!   :) I attempted to try out that emacs, but as you said, XP doesn't like it much.)

And then, there's always Ed.

To all who're having trouble getting Emacs work on Windows, get it from here: http://ourcomments.org/Emacs/EmacsW32.html.  You'll get the latest Emacs 22 with all the cool features, not the outdated and ugly Emacs 21 (which doesn't even support pictures on Windows). It's like, the best thing since the sliced bread!
