Programming a mouse?
« on: February 17, 2011, 04:17:06 pm »

Not the most crucial life advice, but I could use some help regardless.

I've been wanting to program the side-scroll on my mouse (to actually work as a side scroll), and i have absolutely no idea where to start.

What input do you use on the mouse?

You should find this article fascinating.^

USB, If that's what you're asking...

It is interesting, but complex.

I don't think you need to go as far as to program the mouse. I have a mouse with a side scroller - they're not that rare, I think.
Mine came with loads of interfaces and drivers, all from Microsoft, since it's a microsoft mouse. So my side scroll does something weird and overrides whatever window handles do what and forces the side scroll to work with them... I'm not really sure, since I'm not using it right now, but at any rate, I think all you probably needs is an extra program or two.

Has anyone seen any side-scroller overrider programs-y things?

You'll need to obtain drivers for your mouse (or write them yourself) that can handle the sidescroll buttons and then the program you're trying to use it on still needs to recognize the button.

Well, that's what I was just saying. I'm pretty sure I've used the side-scroll in programs that don't tend to use it. I could be wrong though!

The driver that came with the mouse does have the entire programming function and everything, but when you actually go into the button menu it has no other options for button functions, just "New Macro", "New Key Press", "Advanced Commands", and "<DO NOTHING>"

Now see, thats a perfectly good set of options for a mouse button.

If you were trying to make it do something unlike a normal mouse/keyboard, you really need to be more specific.

I just would like the side scroll to do SOMETHING rather than be a blank slot. Basic functions are clear enough, as well as macros, but side scroll has eluded me.

Left-right scroll? Try using left arrowkey and right arrow key for bindings.

If I click in a window in IE, I can scroll with the left and right arrowkeys.

Some odd reason I'm not getting a response, even in test there isn't anything coming in.

So you opened a window with a scrollbar across the bottom, clicked on the inside, and the window failed to scroll?

I opened the testing window (Which tells you if there is any input AT ALL) and gave it a few rolls, not getting anything from it. No matter what i set it to do.

I could give you a whole slew of things I can think of, but my odds of striking anything are pretty low.

Just keep fidgetting with it.
