So, with this new update metals are really rare.
« on: February 17, 2011, 12:17:52 pm »

I'm not feeling like spending hours genning new maps and trying out different sites so has anyone got a good 31.19  3*3 or even better 2*2 site with

1: no aquifer or only a partial aquifer which doesn't need to be pierced.
2: clay
3: bees
4: flux
5: iron
6: sand
7: magma
8: water of some kind.
9: clown hideout.
10: any other really interesting features or wild egg laying animals.

edit: 11: I almost forgot. A dwarven civ which has metal for picks and anvils.

I know it's a bit demanding but I want to try out everything in one fort and the new lack of metals has me a bit spooked.

i got one, no demonic fortress
but yeah clay, bees, flux, pitiful amount of iron(i'll have to rely on goblinite and mountainhome import later, sadly), sand, volcano, stream on the edge of embark site and few murky pools. and my civ has only silver, iron, copper, steel, bronze and bismuth bronze, enough though.

edit: mountainhome does not have cassiterite nor kaolinite, nor does the embark region. so no porcelain and tin glaze  :(

I think part of the point is to keep you from being able to get everything without trading. This is the caravan arc after all

Back to what it used to be like, when finding things like iron, sometimes even copper, was something to celebrate, not an inevitability.

I for one am happy about it.

It's honestly nowhere near as reliable as what we had in 40d and before.

At any rate, this subject is getting beaten into the ground pretty harsh lately, which is understandable enough except that it's spread over something like three threads already. I wrote a post here attempting to detail what's going on.

Yeah, but it's still hundreds of levels underground. Not like the old days.

Which means each embark will have you relying on different materials to survive and prosper. I like.

Well, it has been a while since 40d, and I only (obviously) just started trying this one out.  Perhaps there is a better middle ground, and (from reading your other thread) perhaps they could do better in information on embark and over time I'm sure the trading system will be improved moreso.

That said, IMO at least, if I had to choose between too few materials and too many I'd choose the former.

ETA: In previous versions it was easy to find an embark where you could have all the steel you could possibly need.. This should be a rare (if not impossible, without trade at least) situation.

Yeah, the other .31 versions went way overboard on minerals. It was like living inside of a pinball machine or something. Back in 40d, there was a decent amount, just much less, but it was also trivial to find out what you'd probably have by looking at what layers you have and cross-checking the wiki. Right now, all you know is "I might have metal", really.

I generally agree with you though, and I like where the game is headed with regard to this... it's just showcasing some of the dangers of systems that are only partly implemented.

Maybe I am lucky, bu the lowest I've had to go is 120 or so. And if you think about it, your dwarves would probably walk that far to pick up coal anyway. It isn't quite as efficient but it is useable. Unless you have an aquifer. Then you are in trouble.

Lets be fair though, if you wanted magma in the old days (pre 2010) you were seriously limited in your embark choices, now granted if you did have it it was easy(ish) to find but now you can have magma on any embark, but you may have to drill down... Now I'd like for magma tubes to be put back in (so you had a choice between digging super far down or embarking on a volcano) but this is far more convenient then previous versions in terms of magma.
