Kidnapping woes--children heard, but not seen

In an effort to stop the yearly goblin raids on my shorter dwarves, I set up a host of traps near the entrance of my fortress.  Normally this either stops all the goblins, or one or two gets away with a kid.  This time, however...after receiving a message that one of the children had been kidnapped, I noticed that two of the goblins had tripped cage traps.  

I was a little surprised when the next message I saw in regard to the kidnapped child wasn't about his death, but him throwing a tantrum.  Checked his profile, and noted his complaints about confinement.  Centering the cursor on his position showed him to be in the same square as one of the caged goblins...but not in the terrarium along with the goblin.

I then endeavored to get the goblin out of the cage, hoping that its death would free the kid.  Setting the cage up as a piece of furniture and deselecting the goblin as an occupant didn't work; apparently the goblin was bright enough to realize coming out of his cage in a barracks full of armed dwarves wouldn't end well for him.  Next attempt involved trying to drown the cage; again, no success.  My final attempt actually got the goblin out of the cage; I reassigned it to a different one.  However, the path my dwarf chose to lead it along was rather unsafe for the goblin, who failed to slip by a stonefall trap.  

All this work was apparently for nothin', as the kid's still complaining about being confined...though I'm not sure I want him back, if he can't get away from a dead goblin thief.

Yeah, you usually have to place the cage as a building and then unassign the goblin.  The child was complaining about being confined in the goblin's special kidnapper bag.  I'm not...  quite sure how you'd remove the child from the bag.  Maybe if you place it as a "container" it gets emptied?  Perhaps there's no option now...  none of the other dwarves really care about that sort of thing.  It could be added as a job like "recover wounded".

Maybe given enough tantrums, the child can rip the bag open?

Well, now that the goblin's corpse has been hauled off to the bone pits, the invisible screaming child has relocated into my food stockpiles.  Dunno how he got there, or why, but...

Another odd thing--other dwarves are, in fact, treating him like he's caged.  At least, that's how it appears, since his profile reports that he's been brought food and water after complaining of hunger and thirst.

I wonder what will happen when he finally snaps?

I think the dwarves put any bags that aren't empty into the food piles.  And any caged dwarf or tame animal can request food/water I think.

You know, if the child survives this ordeal. They will be mocked for being unable to fight their way out of a bag!

If you want to save the child the embarrassment, you'll be able to designate the bag for the chasm in the next release.  I'm not really sure how the game will handle the child inside, but there should be ample time to test it with regular caged creatures.

edit: tested it and got the proper message for a mule, cow and horse that were chasm'd in cages

Hopefully there'll be happy thoughts since they've put an end to the tantruming!

So, there's no way to get a kid outta a bag yet?

I have the same problem except for the caged goblin part. All the other dwarves just put the bag in the food stock with the kid in there. I just realized he's still in there cause of the tantrum message. Zooming to him I noticed he's still in the bag.

I wonder if I coulda traded him off to those humans... I wanted to keep the bags from the goblins, but now I'm not so sure.

I'm just bumping this thread to say that for now, you can free children from bags by taking the bags to the trade depot, since apparently taking bags or cages to trade depots automatically frees confined creatures. I think that's not supposed to happen, but it's a fortuitous side effect in this case. Of course, this means they can only be freed when merchants are present, but the dwarves bring them food and water while they're in the bag, which is enough to keep them going until merchants arrive. Throwing them in the chasm kills them, however.

I don't know how high-priority fixing this is, but I have to say I hope it gets done soon- it's pretty annoying. Probably it wouldn't be too hard to fix- if a bag contains a kid, have them freed automatically as soon as a dwarf picks up the bag.
