This sounds hilarious. Can sentients be set to lay eggs? Can't wait till I get back home, to my pc with DF on it.

Someone on the modding forums made his custom draconic race lay eggs.  There's nothing preventing it, apparently.

Actually no, I hate most all drugs, including prescription, and narcotics even worse.  I'm more peppy and excited about this as I realize that all parts of an essential breakfast are coming together nicely!

Hmm, if only we had chocolate, we could make chocolate frosted crunchy sugar bombs.

And I mean that in the literal sense:  I'm pretty sure people we discussing ways to make eggs explosive on the modding forum...

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

We were.  The general consensus is to make the white of the egg flammable and the yolk have a high natural heat, so that when it cracks open it'll catch fire.  We just don't know if eggs crack when they fall, and if the contents of an egg are in stasis, as we assume them to be.

If there's ever a syndrome that makes people turn to stone, we can recreate the stone grenades from Nethack...

Talk about throwing being overpowered, heh.

Even if eggs don't break on impact, it should be possible to get the outer layers to melt off (similarly to how fat does in fire/magma), subsequently exposing the boiling core. This'll make "explosives" more practical than they were previously (wherein they required throwing on essentially the same frame as they were created).

In which case they're likely to boil off the shell the instant they're created, right?

Not necessarily. That's the current problem with high-temp reaction products - because we can only make them out of one material, they're either boiling all the time or they're not.

If the "shell" of the egg melts at a very low temp but has no boiling point, it might melt off like fat does, and assuming that the "white"/"yolk" is volatile but is in stasis until exposed, it'll only be when the melting occurs that the core boils.

So, it sounds like you could control the point of ignition by controlling the heat, like placing the exploding eggs on a floor and then running magma under that floor to raise the heat and cause combustion.  Which begs the question, why?  You can already do this with metals.  The entire point of the egg grenade is for throwing weapons and easily dropped weapons off some form of bridge or hatch.

Could you mod the egg to have a magma yolk and a water white, and create a tile of obsidian when thrown? probably not but it would be FUN.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Sadly no.  You could have it contain contaminants, but it couldn't contain actual water or magma, nor miasma, smoke, or steam for that matter, although it can be made to burn instantly, creating smoke, or boil instantly, creating steam.

That's not what I mean at all. I'll try to illustrate it. Pseudo-raws:

Code: [Select]
[USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:GRENADESHELL:EGGSHELL_TEMPLATE]
[MAT_FIXED_TEMP:10100]
[MELTING_POINT:10000]
[IGNITE_POINT:NONE]
(probably needs some experimentation with SPEC_HEAT)
[USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:GRENADEWHITE:EGG_WHITE_TEMPLATE]
[MAT_FIXED_TEMP:12000]
(insert whatever yolk here)

1. The egg is created via reaction.
2. The shell begins to naturally melt due to its mat properties.
3. When the shell has completely melted away, the white becomes exposed (and therefore volatile).
4. White ignites/boils.
