Egg Hilarity
« on: February 16, 2011, 11:11:27 pm »

So I got a gimpy tileset working, and launched a world.  I set about exploring bees and eggs, by making a few beehives and a few egg nests.  Then I got chicken eggs, and I said "lol sweet, this goes well with my new bacon tree!"  Then a few minutes later, a group of turkey hens rushes into the map, like a group of macaque they run in straight for my base and swarm over it.  They immediately gather on my line of egg nests and proceed to lay several clutches of eggs.

That's right, wild animal will claim your nests and lay eggs on it.  I'm amazed by this and the amounts of abuse that can be used, like catching any given animal by making them lay eggs and putting a nest surrounded by eggs.

Also, if anyone wants to report this to the bug tracker, I'm too lazy.

That's not a bacon tree, it's a hambush!

Kudos if you get the joke.

I'm modding bronze collosussuses to lay eggs.
I'll get the first one to sit on a nest, stock pile its eggs while building my fort. then hatch em, delete the nests and watch the FUN.

Yes, they have an associated material template and are functionally similar to milk, in that you define it inside the animal's file.

Also, apparently you can create an egg in a custom workshop, which may or may not lead to the creation of life via buildings, depending on how hatching works.  I never managed to get an egg to hatch, my test for tantrumed before then.

You could also go nuts and make a creature lay eggs that are made of anything, like oh say bacon maybe?
Edit: sounds like a reasonable mod for warthogs
Edit Edit: How about a rabbit that lays choc eggs?

Can no-gender creatures lay eggs of their own accord, or do you still need both genders?

You can cook eggs.  Just before fort-death, I made a few meals of them.  That makes me wonder exactly how eggs are hatched...

Now make an egg who's shell is bacon, who's white is egg, and who's yolk is delicious maple syrup, and you've got breakfast!

Alligators lay eggs.

...

On an unrelated note, I just lost a fort in under five minutes.

You can get eggs to hatch if you forbid the eggs in the box thing

I haven't updated yet.  Is the new version crazier than I realize, or did you mean to say "cage traps" instead of "eggs"?

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

It's pretty crazy, but I did indeed mean to say cage traps.

wait this solves my taming issue with Adventures all I need to do now is to slap humans with Egg laying build a nest don't take it and boom little adverture spawn waiting to go on awesome quest with momma...or daddie if I screw up and place egg laying out side of the caste.

hmm I wonder if this is a safer way to lure goblins to a trap by building a nest at the end of a long hall filled with drawbridges.
Yui Rapelust  "I think I see an opening! for the horde!"
Oks Slaphead "I can taste dwarf blood right about now... is that a nest?"
*Yui and Oks start dashing to the nest like hens.*

Urist "Well, looks like we be having gobmelet again."
