Dwarves won't pick up items on doors?
« on: August 24, 2006, 09:38:00 pm »

So, I have a farm. I cannot flood this farm because the door is jammed open by a pile of equipment dropped by a dwarf who was killed by a lizardman while holding the door open. His corpse has long since been interred, but his equipment is still there and the dwarves seem completely uninterested in actually moving it to the finished goods storage.

If I look at it, I see:

code:

(cave crocodile leather boots)
(iron chain leggings)
(large rat leather helm)
Sandstone Door
Slate Cavern Floor

And the door is { passable, pet-passable, open }.
It's been like this since early summer, and it's now next spring and interfering with my task of feeding my dwarves.

That's armor -- so it might want to go to an armor stand.  Make sure you [q] the armor stand to set permissions for it.  It's an inconvenient system -- there will be piles and bins and things used later I think, with stand/rack assignment to individual soldiers/squads.

I've noticed that it seems to take dwarves forever to collect weapons and armor, even with a stand set to accept them...  I've had problems with that before.  One of my suits of iron chainmail got stolen because a dwarf left it outside and nobody thought to bring it to the weapon rack for an entire year.

...military dwarves who are deactivated seem to just drop all their equipment wherever they happen to be standing.  That's a little odd.

I'll try that out, then. Thanks. What was confusing me is that clothing, which uses the same glyph (']') they will perfectly happily store them in the finished goods warehouse.

I suspect that this will have to be done by the Reclaimer team, though, because my food is getting critically low, and a wave of immigrants just doubled my population and brought a Sheriff with them. I fear these dwarves are not long for this world.

I have had a similar problem. I tasked my dwarfs to remove a statue but the guy hauling it got distracted and dropped it right in a doorway. It's been sitting there ever since, jamming the door open. The job is no longer in the job list, and I can't select the statue to set them to move it again either.
