Is there a way to remove the Champion tag from dwarves? Reducing their skill doesn't seem to work.

Use the "changeprofession" script to change this dwarf profession into something that makes him manageable. You can't however not remove it from guards right now.

So, champion guards are still stuck?

It would require checking, but IIRC you would be able to control them, but you will not be able to remove them from the guard list.

Run Dwarf Companion from a command prompt(under Windows XP: Start -> Run -> 'cmd', don't know if Vista is different; cd to the appropriate directory, type it there) and you'll have a chance to see what that black screen is telling you.

It's what I did.
There's "Dwarf fortress" written on the window, with a few numbers after it, maybe the version number.

No. It says that Dwarf Fortress isn't running.
I loaded a fortress, paused it and it said the same thing again.

Companion will not work with versions later than 40d.  If you're using Mayday's pack, it won't work because he uses one of the newer .exe's in it.

I'm getting the following error when I try to change from "only dwarves" to "all creatures"

IndexError: list index out of range

The first time this happened was during mid-winter 2nd year of the fort.  I reloaded from the seasonal save made 1 game month ago and it worked fine, so I didn't think anything of it.  However I'm now getting the same error message early in the fortresses 3rd autumn, I can again reload the autumn save to work around but whatever is causing this is recurring.

Would you be interested in my files be helpful for debugging?  I'm running v1.5 over 40d with the the Dig Deeper mod.

That fixed it - evidently the problem was the language bug - caused by named Orcs. 

As an aside, the install instructions on http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Dwarf_Companion are out of date.  I was originally using Valdemar's precompiled 0.15 version, so to upgrade to 0.16 required going through the install.  After loading the following per the instructions there:

Python 2.6.3 from http://www.python.org
Glade 3-3.6.1 from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gladewin32/files
PyCairo 1.4.12-2.win32-py2.6, PyGobject 2.14.2-2.win32-py2.6, and PyGTK 2.12.1-3.win32-py2.6 http://www.pygtk.org/downloads.html

Running 0.16 at this point fails - unable to import _gobject.  So I install gtk2-runtime-2.16.6-2009-09-12-ash.exe from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gtk-win/files/

This fixes the gobject error, but I still had an unable to import glade.gtk error, which I fixed by installing glade-3.3.6.7-with-GTK+.exe from http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/binaries/win32/glade3/3.6/

Also, the aruiz.typepad.com page for the all in one installer still exists, but the installer linked to from that page doesn't.
