Rhetorical whinge aside... That so many utilities out there require Windows and .NET is a problem, not a model to emulate. With the 40d## series, DF has become more and more accessible to people not running Windows, but the community tools are going the opposite direction!

Getting Python running under Windows wasn't a big deal for me. Getting .NET support under Linux? Or Mac? No idea where to begin.

Moving farther away from portability is... disappointing.

Portability has a cost, and .NET is AFAIK the simplest/more elegant way to have a functionnal UI. Doing windows specific stuff has the added benefit to let me inject into the process and run native functions, like name decoding, which are really slow and won't work when you add languages with the current version.

It also would let me add hooks. For example, I did a PoC that transformed living beings killed by undeads into undeads. Finally, I do use the windows version under linux because that ubuntu X server crashes randomly when using the native version :(

That the Windows version may be easier/more stable is cold comfort for those of us who don't HAVE Windows available.

Can't you use wine or any other emulation program?

The computer I have to work with is not very powerful. I'm already pushing the limits of enjoyably-playable framerate as it is(a fortress of any maturity does not go above 20 FPS, and frequently drops below 10 or even 5). Adding a layer of emulation to that... is not an appealing prospect.

It also doesn't address the issue of getting .NET to work properly with Wine.

Regarding the ".NET on non-Windows" thing: I've heard good things about Mono. Not used it though, I'm on windows.

Ah sorry, I didn't see where it's coming. Definitely .NET is not a good thing program wise, I don't even know how to run .NET apps under Mac, and a lot of people prefer Apple these days. Well, it's the author's decision, but in any case I vote Python :). It's easy and accessible.

All right, all right. It seems that nobody cares about the tool being fast or reliable, or having cool dynamic features, if it is only for Windows, so I'll keep on working with the python.

Call me selfish, but I don't give a shit whether this works on non-windows systems.  ;)

Those who run on Windows want it to be faster. Fair enough.

Those who don't, just want it to be available. There's no need to be patronizing about it.

When I did have Windows available, before that computer's motherboard died of old age, I never had any reliability issues, and didn't mind waiting a little bit for it to load. Certainly it was far, far less than the issues separating me from it now.

I happen to have too many creatures on one map I'm running to edit them. Any way around this?

That must have been my problem that no one bothered to answer because I put a tiny suggestion at the top of my post and they got angry then they didn't bother to read the rest.... I guess people don't like fixing bugs.

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

Send me a copy of your savegame and I'll take a look. Sorry for ignoring the other question before I got angry :)

Is there a way to remove the Champion tag from dwarves? Reducing their skill doesn't seem to work.
