Wild animals keep claiming my nest boxes - is this a bug?
« on: February 16, 2011, 05:33:05 pm »

Because what's happening is that angry Elk Birds and Cave Swallow Women are claiming the nest boxes in my pasture on the surface, making beelines through my fortress to the boxes, and attacking every dwarf they meet along the way.

I'm not even sure how they're getting in, but that's another problem.

Think toady forgot to add in the abilty for wild animals to build their own nests.

Good bait though, trap a corridor to the caves/outside, build some extra nests, sit back and laugh.

Now that I have a tame Cave Crocodile I suddenly feel much better about this situation.

So in theory, we can now breed Cave Swallow People in breeding pens, select them for good traits, and perhaps unleash them on goblins?

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

It's not a bug, it's a feature.

These are the sort of bugs that confuse me; they should be immediately obvious to any sort of testing...

To say nothing of grass growing underground every single time.

A single person (or two) can't think of everything.  And the more complex the game, the more things that can go wrong.

Also, a lot of testing is the equivelent of arena testing.  You set up what you specifically want to test out.

Besides, WE'RE the testers.  The game is in open ALPHA testing.

Are the fortresses there for psychological reasons?  Are they trying to hold back entropy itself, rather than the goblin hordes?

As someone who has raised chickens IRL, I've had to chase wild birds out of my nesting boxes before.  If it's a bug, it's one of those surprisingly realistic ones.  But underground animals shouldn't be able to magically sense nesting boxes sitting on the surface, and should be able to produce their own nests.  A wild turkey stealing a box she spots is one thing, an elk bird flying past two cavern layers to do the same is quite another.
