Wait, can you do this even if there isn't soil underneath that layer? I'm curious.

You can still farm on mud, if that's what you're asking.

That's not even remotely what I asked, so allow me to clarify.

Way, way back in the first "DF 2010" release, the intent was that you could farm underground if EITHER of the following conditions is true: 1) The ground is muddy, 2) It's on soil, with another full layer of soil underneath.

The second condition never worked properly, so you always needed mud.

My question is whether or not that bug was fixed, or if the requirements were dropped completely.

You cannot farm on un-muddied rock, so I assume it was fixed.

You couldn't farm on unmuddied rock in the last version either, so I'm not sure what you're implying.

You could never farm on unmmudied rock, but you could farm on unmuddied soil back in 40d. The plan as I understood it was that you could farm either on a muddied surface or an unmuddied soil layer with another z-level of soil underneath the farm plot.

Exactly. I'm curious if Toady removed the requirement for mud entirely (allowing farming on ANY soil underground), or simply implemented the latter case.

I just tested this. You can farm on any soil underground regardless of if there is a soil layer underneath.

If there was a requirement for there being a layer of soil beneath the one you are planting on, then muddying rock would be a ridiculous alternative.  A few inches of mud can't make up for there being solid rock underneath.

...Unless you're a Tower Cap, that is.

BIOLOGY TIME

Mushrooms (i.e plump helmets, sweet pods, dimple cups) don't have roots that go all that deep. While some mushrooms have root systems that spready very FAR, I can't think of any time I've seen a mushroom with particularly deep roots.

Tower caps are huge mushrooms.

The math. Do it.

That's exactly how it worked in 40d. There never has been a requirement to have a solid soil wall one z level below your farm. That was what Toady intended to change it to for 0.31.x but as with most changes around here it didn't work out too well as you've all seen & thus even muddying soil layers was required to build farms regardless of whether you had 5 z-levels of pure unbroken soil underneath your farm plots or none.

I bursted out laughing so hard at this that my dog woke up, came in the room, and looked at me like I'm an idiot.

Then proceeded to brag about how he has 27 kills on his kill list and is super-doggenly tough.

Pretty much. I think the questions are basically resolved now.

Just out of curiousity, how does everyone "know" this?

Ah!  Thanks.  I see plump helmets and dimple cups have PLANT:MUSHROOM in their raws, though none of the other underground crops do.

Sorry to disturb your shroomy conversation.

Anyone else thinks that having bees as a ultimate valueboost of the fotress is a bit... weird? Like... 155k value of bees?

I am aware that bees are awesome but... at least 10k value per beehive is kinda overkill, isn't it?
Edit:
The issue if anyone is interested

Of course it's overkill. There's no real surprise that the new version has bugs.
