DF 31.19 Farming features or bugs?
« on: February 16, 2011, 01:27:40 pm »

Noticed that chickens lay stacks of random number of eggs (range between 4 and 12).
Is this a bug or is this planed that way?

Sheep-shear tug-o-war issue when having an animal to shear asigned to a pen. The tug-o-war between the dwarves can be overcome by placing the farmerworkshop inside the pen.

Watering the soil before building farms is not required anymore... Kinda got used to that feature

I just got 15 eggs out of my first hen and nest box. Don't mind one bit.

Incase anyone was wondering, hives and nest boxes are build in the craft workshop. Stone and wood both work just fine.

First bit:
[CLUTCH_SIZE:4:15]

Normal.

Second bit: Obviously unintended behavior, but it's not entirely new. I remember that happening in older versions when you wanted to do two different things to one animal but I can't remember exactly what those things were.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I believe it was when you were trying to milk an animal assigned to a restraint or cage.

happens with two different farmers workshops, tell them to "milk creature". Dwarf A and Dwarf B have milking labour.

Dwarf A spots Cow 1, leads it towards their workshop. Dwarf B also spots Cow 1, pushes Dwarf A to the ground, and leads the cow towards their workshop. Dwarf A stands up, sees Cow 1 again, pushes Dwarf B to the ground, leads cow towards workshop...

Also observable with an animal assigned to be milked and to be placed into a cage.

Hmmm. Stockpile + pasture + cat = manageable vermin corpses?

Just to confirm, don't you have to muddy underground soil to farm any more?

Wow. Just wow, the fastest, most profitable, almost resourceless industry ever in any environment. Wow.

I think making farming more demanding and difficult is definitely on the books.

Wait, can you do this even if there isn't soil underneath that layer? I'm curious.

You can still farm on mud, if that's what you're asking.

Makes taking a fair few seeds and a couple of farmers pretty darn good right now. I wonder if it was possibly due to the caravan arc and the fact that some underground civs (gobbos and dwarfs) ended up without enough food if they actually had to muddy them? Just speculation.......

Although with livestock becoming a bit more "entity-ish" we'll probably need alot more food just to keep things fed. And possibly demands for food from mountainhome to pay our "tithes" of a colony. No more 5x5 farms feeding everyone perhaps?

Still, one season to get a fully stocked plump helmet and sweet pod larder in the desert should be nice. It was always finding a pond and draining it that took the time in farming, after that the things are worth their weight in gold. So many industries, so much cash, so much happiness for so cheap. Yayyyyyy!
