Don't how many are actually good, but on itch.io some games are free or at least on sale because of COVID-19

Dota 2 isn't on the list?  :o Although it has in-game purchases like lootboxes and items - https://dmarket.com/ingame-items/item-list/dota2-skins, it is free to play; moreover, donations have no impact on the gameplay itself, the only thing that matters is your skill. It is one of the best free games and I think it must be there.

Might as well throw another good game in this here thread: Gun Godz. It is by the developers of Nuclear Throne and takes place in the same universe. Gameplay-wise, however, it is a very short and very hard Wolfenstein 3D-like with an amazing soundtrack.

Symmetry , a survival/management game is free for a bit more than a day on GoG.

Toyed a bit with it, there are some good ideas and some replay value with randomized starting crew and the concept has some nice potential with characters sometime telling their thoughts about what is happening.

but i'm no fan of the interface as you can't just switch directly to a character, you have to move the current camera view all the way to where one of the guys is in order to give him command.

There's also a problem i found more serious, your crew will work themselves to death and have no individual decisions ability, i mean you sent a guy cut some "wood" in order to keep the base radiator working , if you don't check him from time to time, he's going to get tired or hungry (at least there's a small font in the lower right part of the screen message *whatshisname feels bad" or something like that) but if you are focused on something else , by the time you move the camera to the character , there are chances you'll just find his corpse because the character is unable to go eat or rest by himself.

Oh and they walk so slow so when you have important task they should do NOW, don't expect them to survive :D

Steel Panthers: World at War (enhanced version), a.k.a. SP:WaW

https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/spwawdepot/enhanced-fr-full-installation-file-aka-sp-waw-2016-t67.html

Squad & individual tank/vehicle/mortar/ATG/etc level turn-based WWII combat. Play the AI in user-created scenarios/campaigns or random battles/campaigns. Or play against another person via email or on a LAN (LAN is not 100% trouble-free, though).

In that forum there are also packs of hundreds of scenarios, dozens of campaigns, and also the older vanilla version of the game. There are also some mods. Everything is free.

(please add to the list, thanks!)

Well that's 44GBP I wont have to pay. Matrix publishes some good games, but they dive too hard into the 'niche' price tier.

The game has been free practically forever, actually. Matrix only has rights to sell the Mega-Campaigns, which are actually outdated and buggy! (They can't sell the game itself, they just bundle it with those megas.) Of course, they don't want to talk about that. The latest version of vanilla is 8.403 and has been for probably 15 years or more.  Anything beyond that has been community made improvements ongoing since then and still going on today. The community has made the improvements that allow it to work on modern computers, especially Win.10, while Matrix hasn't really lifted a finger in that direction, they just keep on selling what they have to milk it for profit because they don't own the actual game.

(By the way, I've tried to get an avatar picture on my profile but it won't stick!  What's the trick?  I see that 80x80 pixels is the largest, does it not allow using a  picture you have hosted on something like imgbb.com or https://postimages.org/ ?  I've tried both.

For some odd reason, the forum does not accept any url starting with https:, it only accepts http:
There may be more to it than that, but that is all I can put it to atm.

Speaking of free: Epic has Just Cause 4 and Wheels of Aurelia free to keep for the next week, while Uplay has Assassin's Creed 2 - but only until tomorrow!

It's a decent little game. For the price of free, definitely get it and try it out, if you're on Epic.

https://www.totalwar.com/blog/total-war-shogun-2-giveaway-and-total-war-sale-faq/

Total war: Shogun 2 is free to keep starting monday. PCGamer seems to think its going to be a giveaway on steam, the total war article seems to indicate that you have a chance to download it free to the PC during that week but doesnt specify if is from a service.

Also, Pac Man 2 Championship edition is currently free on steam for the next short bit. Unsure of how long remains in that.
