Empires Mod is a free to play mod for Half-Life 2 that mixed Real-Time Strategy with FPS elements - one commander controls building placement and research while other ground soldiers do the actual fighting.

Haven't played it, but it seems worth a go.

Damn, I played that years ago. Didn't play it enough for to get a feel for the community, but with a game that old, I would be surprised at the toxicity.

Eh... that depends on the complexity and whatnot. Generally older players (which tend to be who play older stuff, far as I know) are more chill, but sometimes they... aren't. Particularly when idiot scrubs are crapping up their nice clean murder exchange.

This seems worth a pointless PTW.

Hey, I know a really good game! It's free to play, supported by donations, runs on ASCII graphics, and follows groups of psychotic bearded axe-murderers as they colonize places.

Watch out for the community, they're a bunch of hideous mermaid-murderers and plotters of hideous deaths to rightful rulers. Also, they worship a toad for some reason.(All Hail ToadyOne!)

That's already on the list linked in the OP, but still good to see it mentioned again.

Ooh, nifty. Free to own or just to try out for the weekend, I wonder? I did rather enjoy the first Siralim, rocky though its initial release was. Game shaped up really well though, so I wonder what's improved with the sequel.

Free to own, as far as I can tell Google Play has no "try out" thingies at all, it's always "to own"

As for what's improved in the sequel, the answer is "Basically everything". There's zero reason to get or play siralim if you can choose the sequel instead.

E: And several reasons not to -- S2 has a good handful of quality of life changes that makes playing less janky. It's seriously just an across the board improvement on the original. There's not much change in gameplay or whatnot, but there's more of everything and it's all better done.

Maybe some of you know the card game Race for the galaxy
I didn't :D , but i learned that someone made an open source computer version of it allowing play against up to 5 AI (amount depending on the expansion used) in the base game or with its expansions with the authorisation of the card game publisher :
http://www.keldon.net/rftg/

online multiplayer is also possible, but i didn't tested that part only got crushed so far by my meager understanding of the rules and the ruthless AI :D

If interested by this card game, you can download the PDF rules of the game on the publisher page instead of trying to figure out how to play it by yourself :
http://riograndegames.com/Game/240-Race-for-the-Galaxy

And the PDF rules for each expansions (as you can play all of them in the program Game -> New... option) are available in their corresponding pages :

That's a good version of Race. There are lots of boardgames that are free on the internet with AI's.

The author of that RftG program did the same for the card game Blue Moon to allow AI play (with permission of the owners too) :
http://www.keldon.net/bluemoon/

Haven't tested yet this one so i can't comment more.

Thanks, looks interesting.

I haven't tested either so ditto.

But there is a newer version of rftg (0.9.5) available https://github.com/bnordli/rftg/releases  :)

About the boardgames playable on computer subject i thought it was already on the list but it's not, VASSAL allows you to do that on a huge list of them, but there's no AI unfortunately.
