Seems Desktop Dungeons adopted a similar development method that Kerbal Space Program is currently going down. Their 0.2 version is free, but current versions are not.

Updated the description to reflect that, not sure if it should just be removed entirely since the 0.2 version was pretty popular, and already felt like a pretty complete game...

Actually Desktop Dungeons did that before KSP

Star Sonata 2

http://www.starsonata.com/

Star Sonata 2 will be free to play with no level limit and no time limit.

Free players will have full access to The Nexus, Celestial Garden, Earthforce Space, and will be able to visit Wild Space but won't be able to build or fight there.

Discover profitable trade routes.
Create "slave" ships to fight at your side or to run trade routes.
Build bases to mine moons or planets.

0.2 is complete and a helluva good game to boot. They should be calling this new version DD2 because thats essentially whats going. Full rewrite, new features, etc.

Animal Forest seems to be dead. And the link seems to be redirecting to an unsafe site now.
Never got a chance to try it. Oh well. There are plenty of other awesome games on the list anyway.

I do entirely agree with ductape : version 0.2 is a game by itself, which has been created a long time before the idea of creating a paying version had even emerged.
The creators were really surprised that it even received a bit of attention (after some other tests with "advanced mine sweepers". It is that version that got many reviews and prizes, just for itself, not for the potential project of a second version (which no one had heard of yet at that time...). It is only once that work on the second version started that it got labelled "alpha" and the link to the development site has been added in game.

So, it is a real piece of anthology there. Not an half baked junk thrown at the crowd to tease them. It has to stay in the list !

SWGEmu:

http://site.swgemu.com/forums/index.php

Open source star wars galaxy server and client. The server is roughly caught up to pre combat upgrade and plans to build from there instead of pressing forward with the combat upgrade.

Requirements:
Original SWG install discs.

Then it's not free.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

Then it's not free.

It's in that gray area that leans towards "not free". Some free engines use original discs to get around code/graphics legal stuffs. OpenTTD did it for awhile.

Just looked through here and didn't see Realm Of The Mad God. I would add it in myself, but I don't know if I can.

ROTMG is a bullet hell MMO/Co-op game. more or less

flash games are listed on a different page, scroll down to the end of the game list, you'll see "real games", "flash games" and "freemium", RotMG is listed in flash games.

The last time I tried to update Silverlight it lobbed a brick at me and said "fudge off".

Okay, did one of my random update-sprees. Looked over all the stuff on this page (18) of the thread:

Afterwind is added in Freemium, with a summary from your spiel, Yannanth.
SWGEMU is NOT added. Too legally unclear, and it requires the original discs. Sorry, but no.
I moved ROTMG, it may be flash, but it's kind of wound up with a life of its own. It's in Freemium now.
Desktop Dungeons stays, but I made clear that it's DD 0.2 that is being recommended here.
Added Star Sonata 2 to Freemium; not sure why I hadn't before, I actually played it in beta a bit obsessively. Was pretty fun, especially with a group of players :D
EQ is in Freemium; I never played it, so I just added a bit of the info you provided, Trappin.
Marked Animal Forest as dead, removed the direct link, but left it for archival purposes, and also due to the link to the Bay12 thread on it. Will be doing this with all future dead games as well.

EDIT: forgot a number.
