Myself and some other people have been reviving and old mod for a Cossacks spin off (American Conquest: FB). We currently play Napoleonic battles using it, its quite fun.

The download instructions can be found here: https://hawks-gaming-club.freeforums.net/thread/2/basic-setup-hawks-european-warfare

This week on the epic store the freebies are " TOEM " and "The Last Stand: Aftermath"

The Last Stand , now that's a name that brought some memories to me, and it's indeed a game from the same authors as the Last Stand series of games that were so popular in the era of flash games.

"The Last Stand: Aftermath"
Has anybody played this, I've heard about it but haven't seen any reviews or anything for it. I played all the flash games and was wondering how this on compared to them.

I would say it compares somewhat favorably. I haven't gotten very far into it, so my opinions may change.
It's a repeated-deaths-to-progress kind of game, a la Rogue Legacy, though worse, because there's a constant timer ticking down until your death.
Weapons have pretty low durability. It's also 3d fixed 3/4 view.
Those points definitely detract from the comparison. The rest of it seems pretty on-point for a Last Stand game.
For Free-99, hard to go wrong, as it seems to be worth the time to play it if you at least liked Last Stand 3.

I stumbled upon a game called Helium Rain on GOG. (It seems to also be available on Steam)

Judging by some of the reviews it might had had a price of 20$ or something at some point but it seems to be free now.

I'm still on the tutorial, which does feel like it's dragging way too long and the whole UI is somewhat messy, probably intended for consoles.

You start with a small spaceship which you pilot directly (1st person, cockpit view) hauling people and cargo between space stations orbiting some planet in some system. It's a bit similar to Endless Sky's gameplay loop, but in 3D and it focuses more on how you fly.

The controls are a bit iffy at first, but once you get used to them, the ship will prove to be surprisingly agile. Some people have expressed some grief about the whole docking process but I found it to be quite easy once I understood what I had to do*. The tutorial does make a poor job explaining it though.

Eventually it seems like you can grow into having multiple ships/fleets, perhaps some space stations, which you can then use to establish trade routes/supply lines etc. You "command" the other fleets indirectly from some map menu, giving generic orders for what to do (buy x amount of Y etc). There's supposed to also be combat in the game but I haven't reached that part yet.

The visuals are quite beautiful (even with my low end pc), the music is quite nice and I find flying a ship from station to station to be extremely relaxing. I'm not sure how far I'll go with it, it seems like it can become too much like a clunky spreadsheet simulator if you grow too big but for the price of "free" I'd recommend it even if for just the space trucker part.

*Docking procedure:

So the conclusion I'm getting here is that we use QSPs because dwarves can't pilot submarines.

Thank you for pointing to that Helium Rain, i never heard about it before and grabbed it as it looked like my kind of game.
followed the initial tutorial and docked on the first station, so far feels very relaxing, the docking procedure with alignement reminded me a lot of good old Orbiter  :)
Some very good potential with this one.

Still curious i never heard about it (as it's a genre i have followed for years), that and being free after having been commercial, was it somehow abandonned during "early access" ?

edit : there's a fanmod/fanpatch available for it (it is a base for other mods too in case you want some more) that is supposed to improve the game
https://github.com/SirWanabe/HeliumRain/releases/tag/1.4.1

But it does not work with the gog version (i tried but no go) , so consider getting Helium Rain on itch.io instead as it's free too anyways and the fanpatch will work on this version
https://deimos-games.itch.io/helium-rain

No idea if the steam version of Helium Rain is free but the fanpatch should work with it too if i trust the readme.

One day, like a year or two ago, the dev just announced he's quitting game development, and made his games free.

Actually better than just free, they've been made open source too so coding people interested may even keep going at it.

The other game from that company went free too when they shutdown,  " Astral Shipwright " was the name , only found on steam though.
