Since my last community fortress didn't go so well, I underestimated the power of water pressure.  DAMN YOU OCEAN!  I figured why not start a new one?  And instead of just an ocean let's embark on a terrifying ocean with a volcano right on the shore?  Nothing could possibly go wrong this time!

Pointless backstory:
250 years have passed since the initial colonization efforts in this remote continent.  Since then no one has managed to cross the sea back to their original home and no one has come from there either, they are all cut off from their ancestral home, trapped here with all manner of viscous beasts and savage people.  The dwarves have been pushed back to a mountain range to the northeast but are holding out there, the time has come yet again to try and stake a new claim in this savage land!

List o' mods:
Fortress Defense(Challenge Mode)
Savage creatures taken from Flora and Fauna
A couple (savage) creatures taken from Civilization Forge
Dinosaurs modified by me to fit the new version and a couple more added(most likely poorly)
General replacement of PET_EXOTIC with PET

The updated dinosaur raws can be downloaded here.

I'll probably put up a bit more fluff soon and get the first year up later today, only have one class at 2:30 and the rest of the day is mine to waste.

If you want to be dorfed I'll need:
Name:
Profession:
Skills:
Personality:
Anything else:(Any items or other special needs your character might have)

Also if you want to add your own narrative to the story feel free to chip in at any time.  I doubt I'll be able to give all the dorfs the attention they deserve story-wise so I welcome any additions.

"Her majesty will see you now." the guard rumbled, "Just remember that we will be watching." he continued, hefting his steel battle axe suggestively.  "Yes yes of course, I wouldn't imagine of doing anything that would force you to use your a-axe" Rentorian stammered looking at the razor sharp blade hovering inches from his face.
The throne room was a massive room, large pillars engraved with the history of the colonists adorned every pillar, the walls were adorned with similar engravings depicting both the high and low points of the kingdoms history.  Rentorian's eyes lingered for a few seconds on one of the more recent ones, an engraving he had done himself, it had been an honor for such a lowly engraver to be allowed to add to the throne room.  Lost in thoughts about the high point of his career he finally reached the throne itself, a massive obsidian throne, adorned with steel and the finest gems found under the earth.  Sitting in the throne was Kikrost Sobirkogan, queen of the only dwarven kingdom that still stood in this savage land.  "Your majesty." Rentorian said as he bowed respectfully to her, "Why did you summon me?"  The queen was silent for a few moments before she spoke, "Rentorian, as you know in the old lands there was a custom that whenever a new family rose to the throne they would initiate a purge of the courts.  Removing anyone who was deeply loyal to the old ruling family in case they harbored thoughts of placing a son or daughter of that family on the throne instead of one who had proven themselves capable."  Rentorian opened his mouth to reply but was cut of by when the queen continued. "This is a tradition that we carried on here among these barbarians ever since we founded this great mountainhome, however due to those barbarians our kings and queens have fallen in battle quite fast and each new monarch has instigated a purge of their own."  The queen started to pace back and forth in front of the throne as she continued her speech.  "However the nobles have noticed this trend, it took over two centuries but they have figured out that no monarch will last long and it is likely that anyone they show allegiance to will be gone by the next year and they will be sent away by the new monarch.  It has become increasingly hard to find people to exile in order to uphold our traditions because of this."  She turned toward Rentorian and ceased pacing as she asked him, "I believe you worked for the previous king, did you not?  Engraved a rendition of the battle of the smiling plains for him?"
"ah well, the thing is your majesty."  Rentorian stuttered, seeing where the conversation was headed.  "In fact it was that engraving right over there." The queen said sharply, pointing at the engraving Rentorian had so recently admired, "which means that you worked closely and loyally with the old king."  a small smile started to bloom across her face as she continued, "Therefore as tradition dictates you are hereby exiled from the mountainhomes, no longer will you find safe haven here."  Rentorian quickly paled as she continued speaking, "However I am not heartless, you will be given a chance to prove yourself loyal to me.  You will be given supplies and sent to establish an outpost along with six other dwarves I have found to be quite loyal to the old monarch.  I have even discovered a location for you establish your fortress, a small island on the far western side of the continent.  I wish you luck in your new vocation as Overseer of Migrur Keshan.  Dismissed."  Rentorian could only gape in horror as he was dragged from the courtroom by a pair of the royal guards.

Rentorian's thoughts were racing as he was escorted to the entrance of the fortress, he had been told of the people he would be sharing this new task with:  Theo, a brewer who had made some fine beer the king had enjoyed on occasion, Extol, the mason who had constructed the a cabinet for the king, Muldoon, a hunter who had caught the stegosaurus that had been the centerpiece of one of the king's many feasts, Sir Kibble, a man who had both served as a sometimes guard of the king and had made several stone figurines of the king by his request, Kazak a farmer that had tended the farm plots that supplied Theo's still, and Baron Baconeer who had butchered the stegosaurus that Muldoon had hunted down.  Each accusation of potential sedition was flimsy but none of them were important enough fro there to be an outcry against their exile nor were they unknown enough to have escaped notice by the queen.  As Rentorian boarded the wagon and it started to trundle away from the mountains he had known all his life he looked back and one thought echoed firmly in his mind, "Good riddance."

Sorry for the dissapearing act, been busy with a couple projects, tests, and the usual distractions.  However without further ado here is year one of the Ocean of Flames!
***************************************
"I think we're almost there."  Rentorian said as another nasty bump almost knocked him from his seat in the wagon.  "Didn't you say that yesterday?" Kazack replied as the wagon crested the mountain.  "Most lik-" Rentorian was cut off as the wagon started moving down mountain faster and faster, the leads and limbers snapping as the animals drawing the wagon strained at the sudden weight.  The wagon went clattering down the mountain before it hit a small plateau with a resounding crash that shattered all four wheels.  As everyone came rushing down the mountainside they heard Rentorian shakily call out from underneath several barrels of beer "We're here." before falling unconscious.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

***************************************
From the personal notes of Rentorian, Overseer
We've scouted out the surrounding area and found the perfect place to start digging out our fortress.  Its easily defended and cut off from most of the mountain unless you can fly or climb sheer cliffs.  In any case it will be good to work a pick again, I haven't done that in years...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Granite 8
Muldoon decided to start hunting today...  Most of the animals we've seen so far have all been out in the ocean, nothing that a hinter like Muldoon could work with.  That's when Muldoon pointed out a pair of... well monsters that had just crested the mountain.  They were massive scaly monsters, they looked a little like the velociraptor that my cousin had fro a pet a while back but much much larger, I've been told these things are called Tyrannosaurs...  But what really drew me was it's mouth, massive and filled with enormous teeth I can only imagine could tear a dwarf apart with ease.  And Muldoon is going to try and hint that thing!  With a crossbow!  Maybe I should have Extol start making a coffin...

Granite 10
HOLY-  IT- I- I don't really know what to say... was digging out the trade area when I saw Baron Baconeer run by with a manic grin on his face just repeating "He caught it!  He caught it!" I think Baconeer might have been chuckling too.  I followed him out to his temporary butchers shop and saw Muldoon, dragging the massive corpse of one of those monsters he had pointed out to me into camp by the tail like it was nothing!  That was when Baconeer started pulling out a pile of knives and meatforks and cleavers and things I don't even have names for!  A monster hunter and someone with more knives than sense...  I don't think I should let either of them read this now...

End of Spring Report:
I figure I should put in some sketches of how the fort is progressing since I've been so busy digging out the fortress to write.

Spoiler: Trading area (click to show/hide)

Hematite 25
Today we had our first wave of migrants!  Unfortunately they had some... bad news.  They were all really excited to be here and to see me, if a little surprised by how small the fort was at the moment.  They just kept asking me about the sword, were was the sword, could they touch the sword.  It took a while to get it out of them but apparently the queen had told them that we had sent her a message that we had managed to find adamantine and had made a masterful weapon out of it already.  I was pretty quick to tell them that we hadn't found any adamantine, let alone made beautiful weapons out of them.  I saw all their faces slowly turn from confusion to horror when they realized what that meant.  Every dwarf has heard the stories, castles made of a stone that we cannot work, containing hordes of the dead, bound by some evil to defend the fortress for all eternity in their undeath.  And at the center of each fortress a weapon, forged by the gods and placed there to hold that evil at bay.  I'm not sure if the queen was making things up or if she really sent us here knowing what was just under our feet...
Bah, rambling again...  In any case the migrants were Stukos Etostsazir the carpenter, Zas Fikodatst the fisherdwarf, Minkot Nilenkos the soap maker, Asem Bavastlimul the tanner, Atis Fikodkib the milker, and Momuz Domasidok the woodcutter.  I reassigned Atis to mine with me and had Minkot start working our furnace.  They weren't too happy about that but we don't really have much use for a milker or a soap maker quite yet.

End of Summer report
It's amazing that summer has really ended already, the only things of note were the migrants and the news that there might be a bastion of pure evil here, between that and all the mining I haven't had much time or events to write about.  Here are this season's sketches:

Spoiler: Farming areas (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Irrigation (click to show/hide)

Limestone 27
More migrants today!  I'm glad to see that there are so many people willing to come here to help us out, even if they are coming here because of a lie.  They had come here about the sword too, I don't think the queen will be able to keep using that to get people to come here much longer.  There's no way we would only make one weapon if we had a source of godmetal right?  In any ase this season's migrants were Tholtig Giginalath the mason, Solon Ezardakost the animal trainer, Kadol Dorenesmul the leatherworker, Doren Gikenmonom the chees maker, Dodok Kadolment the engraver.  I'm glad that there's another person here that shares my passion for engravings, even if all we really use our skills for right now is to smooth out the living areas.

Timber 16
Outpost liaison and a caravan from the mountainhomes came by today!  We'll finally be able to send a real message to the mountainhomes as well as trade away some of our crafts for some more food and drink!

Timber 20
Theo got together with the merchants and hammered out a deal with the merchants.  They took all the crafts Sir Kibble had been making in his spare time and we got a rather large amount of food and drink, Theo will also be able to turn the plump helmets we bought into plenty of fine beer.

End of Autumn Report
I suppose I should take more breaks during the season instead of just mining and smoothing all the time... Oh well, there will be time for more entries when we've established a good fortress.

Spoiler: Irrigation area done (click to show/hide)
Now all we have to do is add the hatches and connect it to the ocean, I'll be digging out a shaft and then channeling that shaft to reach the ocean.  I've heard stories about people underestimating the water pressure and destroying their forts by stupidly connecting to the sea from underground.

Moonstone 20
The merchants left today, I'm not sure why they stayed here for so long, we traded with them pretty promptly and made it pretty clear they didn't have anything else we wanted but they just stuck around eating and drinking our stocks.  Lazy bastards.
I guess that adds the merchants to the list of people I can never let read this too though.

Opal 17
The outpost liaison finally got around to a meeting with Theo.  Why is it that everyone that doesn't come here to stay waits around for so long before they get around to doing actual work anyway?
In any case they we asked that they some food and drink and as much flux stone as they can carry.  It's not a pleasant thought that steel production will be entirely dependent on getting flux from the mountains but it's better than no steel at all.  The liaison also gave us a list of things that will apparently be worth a lot of money next year. The only thing on the list that I think we'll be making is the figurines, the other things we'll wither keep for ourselves, like food and drink, or just aren't going to make a lot of yet, like maces.

End of Winter Report
It's amazing that the year is already over...  I had been hoping to have more luck with capturing some wild animals and taming them, but it's surprisingly difficult to set up proper trap nets on mountains.  Maybe we'll have more luck next year.

Spoiler: Another Bedroom block (click to show/hide)

Also
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is the outline for the beginning of my Corridor of Flames.  The volcano stretches up far above the beach so I'm going to try and divert some of that magma to bridges set up above the corridor that is being built and connected to a single lever that when pulled will drown anyone in the corridor with magma...  Although I should probably make a way to quickly drain it too...
*****************************************
Holy hell that was long.  Although most of it's length was just fluff, still longer than I expected.  Hopefully it makes up a bit for my disappearance.

All the fields are properly irrigated and no one died!  I have no idea why I'm so happy about that though.  After all, properly irrigating fields shouldn't be too horribly difficult.

Felsite 1
We had the first wave of migrants of the year!  Thankfully it seems the message that the weapon the queen was talking about is probably deep underground in a fortress of evil got trough and no one came by to see it.  Despite that this was the largest group of migrants to date!  It looks like things are definitely looking bright for Migrur Keshan.  Most of the dwarves that came this time are here to escape the oppression of the mountainhomes, or here to get away from family, the most interesting however, was a dwarf by the name of Spuddy.  Apparently he heard about our volcano/ocean arrangement and saw it as a golden opportunity!  He was able to help me quite a bit with the design of my Corridor of Flames and with his insight it might be up and running as soon as the end of the year!  Barring unforeseen incidents that is.  In any case here is the list of migrants for this group: Mistem the Siege Engineer, Cog the fishery worker, Kogan the Animal Trainer, Ustuth the Milker, Geshud the Tanner, Nish the animal caretaker, Mistem the Stonecrafter, Inod the Bowyer, Ushrir the bowyer, Astesh the woodworker, Iton the siege operator, Onul the fishery worker, Kumil the brewer, Zulgar the bone doctor, Zefon the soap maker, Besmar the planter, Minkot the glassmaker, Spuddy the !SCIENTIST!, Moldanth the bonecarver, Zon the surgeon, Inod the weaver, Kadol the tanner.
Inod has been assigned to the new magma forge, Kogan has been designated a weaponsmith, and a different Inod has been designated an armorsmith.  After all we need more weapons and definitely need more armor.  I also appointed Onul to the position of bookeeper, and Zon to manager.  For now we'll have to make do with copper but I think I may have seen a vein of iron by the ocean...  I also am going to set up a catapult for Iton to practice with, in time we'll replace it with a ballista but a catapult is much better for training purposes.

Felsite 13
We're under siege!  A group of sixteen frogmen have been sighted at the border of our land!  However our military is only a measly three dwarves and their war animals!  I can only hope that the traps we've installed in the corridor will assist in warding off the invaders before we have to cross blades.

Spoiler: Just before the battle (click to show/hide)

Felsite 15
We weathered our first siege today, and even though we survived I can only count this battle as a loss.  The traps we had installed were easily bypassed with minimal injuries and a nearly completely healthy force of sixteen stood against our brave military.  It was a fierce and bloody battle, everyone understood that the only way to drive off these savages would be to demoralize them by slaying their commander.  Sir Kibble and Kazak both managed to confront the leading swordwoman, surrounded though she was by several of her personal guards.  They launched themselves into battle with no regard for their safety, thinking only to crush this enemy and keep the rest of us safe.  The landed several blows on the vile woman, knocking her unconscious and bleeding.  The frogmen, seeing their commander prone on the ground scattered to the four winds.  We all started cheering as Kazak and Sir Kibble turned to us and thrust their weapons into the air in defiance of the enemy that lay at their feet, and collapsed.  Dead from dozens of stabs and slashes.  Everyone stopped cheering the moment they fell to the ground, shocked that two such fine dwarves had died, our silent sadness quickly turned to fear as the frogwoman commander staggered to her feet and ran to the horizon, alive but battered.  Several of us gave chase but even injured she managed to lose us when she dove into the ocean.  I.... I don't really know what to do...  Kibble and Kazak, I spent the last year with them, they were establishing pillars of this outpost... and they're gone.

*******************************************************

That's it for spring.  Kazak and Sir Kibble are the only ones who died this season if you want to be redorfed just say so.  Also, should I keep listing all the dorfs that show up in migrant waves or just list them by number of each profession or something?

Sure, I like to be redwarfed. you can name it Sir Kibble II. He wanted to find his father and create a proper burial chamber for him, same profession as usual. Also are you working on building more cage traps? It would be awesome if we caught a T-Rex and tamed it.
